What You Should Know About Applying to Fuqua This Year

Par 100 posts (V.I.P)
In my nearly 20 years at Fuqua, I have watched the admissions process evolve from paper applications and mailed transcripts to digital platforms and, now, the growing influence of AI. While the tools applicants use have changed dramatically, one thing has remained constant: our genuine excitement about getting to know the unique experiences, perspectives, and aspirations each candidate brings to our community. As we open the 2026–2027 Duke MBA application, we are introducing several updates designed to support applicants, provide greater clarity, and create additional opportunities to engage with Fuqua.

Individuality in the Age of AI

It is impossible to ignore the growing role that artificial intelligence plays in our daily lives. Whether we are brainstorming ideas, organizing information, or improving written communication, AI-powered tools have quickly become a common part of how many people work and learn.

We recognize that applicants may choose to use these tools during the application process. While AI can support editing and clarity, we believe applicants will tell their stories better than any tool can.

At Fuqua, we often talk about Authentic Individuality — the idea that every member of our community brings a unique set of experiences, perspectives, values, and aspirations. Authenticity is one of the most important qualities we look for in an application, and our essays are designed to help us understand what makes an applicant unique and get to know the person behind the resume, transcript, and test score.

This year, we have updated our essay instructions to provide clear guidance on the appropriate use of AI tools in the application process. Our expectation for applicants is straightforward: your ideas, experiences, reflections, and personal insights should be your own. AI may be used to support editing and clarity. It should not be used to generate the content of your essays, and doing so would undercut the very individuality that is your biggest strength.

By providing this guidance, we hope applicants can confidently navigate evolving technology while ensuring that we can genuinely understand who they are and what they will contribute to Team Fuqua.

Expanding Application Fee Waiver Policy

Talented future leaders come from a wide variety of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. That’s why our team continually looks for ways to ensure that the admissions process reflects both our values and the kind of community we strive to build. This year, we are expanding eligibility for application fee waivers to make it easier for prospective students to engage with Fuqua.

For the 2026–2027 admissions cycle, members of the Teach For All network and citizens of countries designated by the United Nations as Least Developed Countries (LDCs) are eligible to receive an application fee waiver. Candidates from these communities often bring experiences that reflect a deep commitment to leadership, service, education, innovation, and impact. They contribute perspectives shaped by diverse cultural, professional, and societal contexts, enriching classroom discussions and strengthening the collaborative learning environment that defines Team Fuqua.

We are also introducing a waived application fee for all candidates who apply through our Early Action round. Early Action applicants benefit from receiving an admissions decision earlier and having the opportunity to engage with members of the Fuqua community, including the Career Management Center. This option remains binding and is designed for candidates who are confident that Fuqua is their first choice and are ready to make a mutual commitment to joining our community.

In addition, applicants who participate in select admissions programs and events will continue to receive an application fee waiver. These opportunities allow prospective students to experience Fuqua’s culture firsthand, connect with current students and alumni, and learn more about the MBA experience. These events include:

The Road Ahead

As I reflect on these updates, I’m reminded of the many interactions I’ve had with applicants over the years. Moments when someone shares a story that only they could tell, often revealing a defining experience, a personal challenge, or a unique perspective, bring their application to life. That’s what we hope this process continues to encourage.

For prospective students just beginning the application journey, I look forward to getting to know you in the months ahead.
