WALKING ON A THORN - A SUMMER PROJECT

To do a summer internship is very hectic!!! But somehow i managed to finish my summer project in SRM hospital which is located in Trichy. Since i belong to health care management and i'm very keen on QUALITY OF SERVICE provided by organization in RURAL AREAS, i did my project in SRM Hospital. On the very first day, i was very much nervous on how the organisation was going to respond to my queries related to my project. But i was very lucky enough to get all the information except for few data which was very confidential.

SRM Trichy branch is a multi speciality and 500 bed hospital which employs about 700 employees. Since it was located in rural area, patients were very easily accessed to the hospital and there were free transport facilities provided for them. The organization was started on 2008 and pay back period would be minimum of 6 - 7 years. I had an oppturnity to meet a higher officials like MS, CAO, CFO, Finance and General manager of the hospital and most of them were kind enough to reveal the statistics about the hospital. Right from Doctors, Nurses and other paramedical staff were actively invovled in the organisational culture and they were kind towards the patient. I was actively invovled analysing the performance and qualty of the service provided by the organisation to the patient. I've made a survey in various aspects and with different parameters for a detailed analysis of the data.

Finally i had prepared for a presentation with various hopes and thoughts. I was able to get 80% for my presentation and also for my project work. The external examiner was very impresssed with my project work and i had a great recognition for my proposal. Though it was like WALKING ON A THORN, it was most biteer and memorable experience for me. Hope the same would happen for my main project...

This is a concise yet insightful account of a summer internship, effectively conveying the initial anxieties, the richness of the data collected, and the ultimate success of the project.

Project Focus and Initial Apprehensions

The author, a healthcare management student, chose to undertake a summer internship at SRM Hospital in Trichy, driven by a keen interest in the quality of service provided by organizations in rural areas. This specific focus highlights a clear academic and professional interest. The "very first day" was marked by nervousness about how the organization would respond to project-related queries, a common apprehension for interns. However, this fear was largely unfounded, as the author was "very lucky enough to get all the information except for few data which was very confidential," indicating a cooperative environment.

Immersive Organizational Access and Data Collection

The description of SRM Trichy as a multi-specialty, 500-bed hospital with 700 employees, located in a rural area, provides crucial context. The mention of "free transport facilities" for patients underscores the hospital's commitment to accessibility in a rural setting. A significant aspect of the internship was the opportunity to meet high-ranking officials like the MS, CAO, CFO, Finance, and General Manager, most of whom were "kind enough to reveal the statistics about the hospital." This level of access is highly valuable for an intern and points to the organization's transparency and willingness to support the project.

The author was "actively involved analysing the performance and quality of the service provided by the organisation to the patient," suggesting a hands-on role in the project. The mention of making a "survey in various aspects and with different parameters for a detailed analysis of the data" indicates a systematic approach to research. The observation that "Doctors, Nurses and other paramedical staff were actively invovled in the organisational culture and they were kind towards the patient" adds a qualitative dimension to the service quality analysis.

Successful Outcome and Memorable Experience

The culmination of the internship was a presentation, for which the author "had prepared for a presentation with various hopes and thoughts." The positive outcome – scoring 80% for the presentation and project work, with the external examiner "very impressed" and the proposal receiving "great recognition" – clearly indicates a highly successful and impactful internship.

Despite the positive outcome, the author describes the experience as "WALKING ON A THORN," signifying the inherent challenges and difficulties faced during the project. However, it was ultimately a "most biteer and memorable experience," suggesting that the challenges made the achievement even more rewarding. The final hope for similar success in the "main project" (likely a master's thesis or final year project) ties the internship directly to future academic endeavors, highlighting its foundational importance.
