Vodafone Foundation initiates Digital Classroom
Social innovation has always been a key focus for the Vodafone Foundation team. Serving communities right from infants, kids, children, adolescence, women till old age, Vodafone Foundation has launched various initiatives to address social causes concerning nations across the world.
Supporting the cause of education across all age groups is vital for the society. However, its reach and affordability continues to be a challenge in some poorly resourced countries. Spearheading the cause of education, Instant Classroom was created from Vodafone Foundation's experience of running eLearning programmes in refugee camps with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and education NGOs.
Instant Classroom is designed to be deployed to a school where it can be plugged into the schools existing power supply and internet connection. A mini digital 'school in box' can be set up within minutes and be utilized to give an opportunity to children in refugee camps to continue their studies.
18,000 people in the Dadaab refugee settlement in northern Kenya have benefited from the Instant School Network programme in 2014. This year Instant Classroom aims to deploy help to 40,000 children and young people in Kenya, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
