Greetings from Philadelphia and the Lauder Institute, a unique joint-degree program where students earn both the Wharton MBA and an MA in International Studies from Penn’s School of Arts & Sciences!
Our office has been very quiet this summer; but looks can be deceiving as students, faculty, and staff alike have been traveling across the globe. In May the Lauder Class of 2014 came together in Philadelphia for a month of classes, including International Political Economy of Business Environments and respective area history courses; language and culture prep in anticipation of their upcoming summer immersions; and orientation activities, including a trip to Estée Lauder headquarters in Manhattan. Then in June the students departed for their two-month overseas summer immersion programs with their language programs, where they will participate in intensive language study, attend corporate visits and cultural excursions, and meet with Lauder alumni.
Not to be outdone by the newest class, members of the Lauder Class of 2013 are pursing internships in locations ranging from Senegal to Shanghai to Seattle and everywhere in between. Just to give a flavor of the variety of professional goals in this class of 2013, we have students interning at the UN World Food Program in Rome, Google in New York City, Bain in Mexico City, IFC in Istanbul, and Abraaj Capital in Dubai. Of course, these are just a few examples of the amazing opportunities Lauder students are taking advantage of this summer. We also have quite a few entrepreneurs at Lauder, some of whom were recently highlighted here for their internships in Brazil, including Lisa Lovallo and Marcus Anderson, who co-founded a company connecting employers in Brazil to top international candidates; Tom Baldwin, who is working in business development at Olook, e-commerce fashion brand in Brazil; and Brett Lewis, who is spending his summer at Monashees Capital. Many members of the Lauder Class of 2013 will finish their summers by conducting research abroad with classmates for the Global Knowledge Lab (GKL) research projects. We are excited to welcome both classes back to Philadelphia in September with our annual Welcome Back Party, including a photo contest from the summer’s adventures.
Marcy Bevan, Lauder’s Director of Admissions, and I have joined the MBA Admissions team on road this summer sharing our knowledge of Lauder and highlighting the new Global Program for multilingual students. For more information on this newest offering, see Lauder Director Mauro Guillen’s recent podcast. Earlier this summer we traveled to Europe and South East Asia to meet with candidates, and Marcy was recently in Latin America. I just returned from East Asia after meeting candidates in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul and Tokyo. To see where Lauder will be traveling domestically later in the summer and early fall, please continue to check the MBA Admissions Events page.
Have a great remainder of the summer, and we hope to see you during our travels or during a visit to campus! If you have questions about Lauder please don’t hesitate to contact me.
