3. Identify the key characteristics in the Big Five personality model, locus of control, Type A and Type B.

What is Personality?
The relatively stable pattern of behaviours and consistent internal states, that explain a person’s behavioural tendencies.

What shapes personality?

Personality and Self-Concept
Self-concept – the view that individuals have of themselves as physical and social beings. Self-esteem: belief about one’s worth based on an overall self-evaluation.

Self-efficacy: belief about one’s ability to successfully completing a specific task.

The Big Five Model (OCEAN)

High conscientiousness: •Set higher goals •More motivated •Higher org. citizenship •Strongest association with task performance

The Big Five Model and work-related behaviour
High extroversion: •Better at jobs that have a high level of interaction •Better at sales and customer service

High emotional stability: •Better able to cope with stress •High job performance High openness to experience: •Better at creative, innovative jobs

High agreeableness: •Better at interpersonal relations •Better in conflict-based situations

Personality Types

Type A and B

Type A •Tend to work faster (even when there is no deadline) •Get more done in the presence of distractions •Tend to seek more difficult and challenging work

Type A & B and work-related behaviour

Type B •Perform better on jobs that require patience or careful judgment •Tend to be more effective in top-level managerial roles

Locus of Control

Locus of Control and work-related behaviour
Internals:

•Make more attempts to acquire information, and are better at utilizing the information they have
•Generally show better job satisfaction

•Perform better on learning and problem-solving tasks
•Show greater self-control, are less anxious •Display greater work motivation, expect that their hard work will lead to good performance •Are more independent, more reliant on their own judgment
