Market
The Indian economy has been on a roll for nearly twenty years. The markets are abuzz with new launches, catering to an ever-widening clientele. This has impacted all sectors, especially retail; in turn this has led to the boom in demand for branded foods. Every trick in the book has been used to grab the attention of this market. But the one that has proved to be the most effective is not display, as is commonly believed, but packaging. Packaging has converted planned purchase into an impulse buy. The packaging industry has surged forward at a searing 20% growth per annum (Source: industry estimates). This extraordinary achievement is reflected in all its sub segments. The one, however, that has truly set the pace is the flexible packaging and printing sector. Internationally, too, with this industry performing well, huge export opportunities, particularly in emerging markets like China, South East Asia and Latin America are opening up. This combined market is estimated to be in the region of US$ 70 billion (Rs. 280,000 crore) (Source: Flexible Packaging Industry Report 2007)

multi-million dollar integrated infrastructure – it has proven competencies and certifications from ISO, BRC and HACCP. The company is a one-stop shop which offers the entire range of

Other innovative products include the zipper and slider action, tamper-evident packaging – Z-Step – as also WPP bags and 3-D pouches. UFLEX has invested heavily in a manufacturing plant in the UAE. This ultra modern facility is certified with ISO 9001:2000 for Quality Management Systems, ISO 14001:2004 for Environmental Management Systems Standards, ISO 22000:2005 for conforming to Hygiene and Food Safety Application for Packaging and the HACCP-based Food Safety System Standards. The UFLEX story isn’t just about supplying to manufacturers. The company spotted a need – and created – the zip pouch, a versatile, modern and a hygienic storage solution that meets the changing food habits of Indian consumers.

innovative packaging solutions. The company’s back-end supports the demands from six continents, 91 countries and several hundred customers. Some of the best brands in the world work with UFLEX, to bring ideas to life. The list is a veritable who’s who of international business – Nestle, Unilever, GSK, Perfetti, Cadbury, P&G, Walmart-Bharti, D S Group, Haldiram, Britannia, Lays, Castrol, Colgate Palmolive, Godrej, Pillsbury and dozens of others. Such is the dominance of UFLEX in India that nine times out of ten a customers’ preferred choice of an FMCG brand would have been dressed in UFLEX technology. UFLEX has served these brands not only through quality products but also through regular innovations. It would hardly be surprising to know that India’s fastest growing flexible packaging company has won every significant national and international award. Amongst the more prominent ones are the Top Exporter Award of BOPET and BOPP films; the 5-Star India Packaging Award; the World Star Award; the Dupont USA Global Packaging Award; the Flexible Packaging Achievement Award in the US and the Award for Waste Management in Switzerland. In pursuing excellence, UFLEX has also joined hands with world leader Hosokewa Yoko of Japan to bring to India a remarkable packaging solution: sleeve-in-pouch (SIP). This technology has been used for brands like TATA tea and Haldiram’s. The story of UFLEX, in many ways, is the story of the Indian flexible packaging industry. Nearly two decades ago a single man’s dream to create a professional, multinational corporation launched a company on a trajectory that would go on to redefine packaging. Ashok Chaturvedi, the company’s founder Chairman and Managing Director brought together under one roof, his entrepreneurial skills, the latest international technology and a group of highly motivated professionals. It wasn’t long before the young company had received its first order

and appreciation for top quality production, promptness of delivery and service to match. Over the years UFLEX has strengthened its offering. Today, the company is fully integrated, both backward and forward. As a result it can provide complete end-to-end solutions to all flexible packaging initiatives. Through its vast array of innovative products and services UFLEX has enriched businesses and created wealth for its stakeholders.

Product
UFLEX is a truly one-stop shop. Its backward integration makes it completely self-reliant and impervious to external forces. The company manufactures in-house, polyester chips, BOPET, BOPP, CPP and coated and metalised films, inks,

adhesives, flexible packaging laminates and pouches, rotogravure cylinders, packaging machines as well as converting equipment. This ensures customers top quality and assured delivery at competitive prices. Flexible packaging replaces traditional materials like paperboard, glass and tin with modern, lightweight and durable materials such as plastic films, paper and aluminum foil, The end-product consists of multi-layer laminated rolls of plastics – PVC, LDPE, HDPE, BOPP, BOPET – or paper, cloth or metal foils used separately or in combination to meet various packaging needs. The applications of flexible packaging include labels, adhesive tapes, wrappings and bags for foods, tobacco, textiles and other consumer products. The principal substrates currently used by the flexible packaging industry are BOPET and BOPP films. These films ensure aroma retention and moisture and facilitate good quality printing. While BOPET films are preferred for their versatility. BOPP films are highly cost effective and functionally efficient. The technologically superior BOPP film manufactured by the company can be structured for almost any machine requirement and finds application in a wide range of industries including packaging, industrial coating, holography, metalising, printing and lamination. economies – are the ready-to-eat and the ready-tocook segments. However, it is the pet food industry, responding to the clarion call of ‘pet humanisation’ that is truly exploding. This trend cuts across the entire world – from the developed economies of Europe, Japan and the US to the developing economies of India, China, Brazil and Mexico. WPP bags with innovative need-based concepts are, therefore, the new growth avenues. Not surprisingly, UFLEX is fully geared to avail these emerging opportunities and develop its value-added business. To ensure it doesn’t miss a step UFLEX is setting up a US$ 91 million (Rs. 364 crore) green field project in Mexico for manufacturing polyester films. In Dubai it is constructing a PP film facility at an estimated capital outlay of US$ 65 million (Rs. 260 crore) and a US$ 50 million (Rs. 200 crore) plant in Mexico to manufacture special high-value packaging laminates and WPP bags.

been able to so quickly carve for itself. Besides this, the company participates in major domestic and overseas exhibitions where the core competencies of UFLEX as an integrated packaging giant is showcased.

Brand Values
Simplicity is the key to everything UFLEX does. Indeed, the basic question that precedes every decision is simply this: will it help to serve the consumer better and faster? This has led UFLEX to invest very substantially in research and development which in turn has helped the company grow, innovate, adopt state-of-the-art manufacturing processes and expand its offerings. If the company is today a one-stop shop for quality products at competitive prices, it owes it in great measure to this philosophy. UFLEX recognises the degradation in the world’s environment and recognises that this, indeed, is the only world we have. As a responsible corporate entity UFLEX has instituted several measures to control pollution and contribute to a better social order. The company is also expending energies to creating better packaging. It is hoped that these will help conserve resources by enhancing the shelf-life of perishable products. Simple as it may sound the task is a difficult one, requiring UFLEX to explore the very basics of chemicals and chemical reactions. For its efforts the company has been awarded the ISO 14001 accreditation issued by DNV.

laminates or pre-formed packs or pouches depending on the customer’s specific manufacturing or packaging need. The Zipouch manufactured by UFLEX is available either as DailyZip, ZipWrap or Zipfoil. The product, convenient, reusable and microwave-safe, allows storing of either hot or cold foods, fruits and vegetables or stationery, trinkets and clothes. Zipouch bags are made with internationally approved FDI standards. UFLEX is largely a business-to-business brand. It periodically puts forward communications relevant to this audience. A corporate campaign released recently has, however, cut across consumer profiles and showcased the achievements of the company. The attempt was to build confidence and put on display the vast and versatile product range and the clients – both big and small – who patronise it. Besides the corporate campaign, largely aimed at decision-makers, UFLEX has been able to connect with housewives with its Zipouch range of storage bags. The campaign was rich in visual appeal and amply demonstrated the products ability to retain freshness longer. A measure of its success is the niche that the product has
