TTC [/b]service resumes from St. George to Lawrence[/b]
The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is a public transport agency that operates transit bus, streetcar, par transit, and rapid transit services in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Established in 1921, the TTC comprises four rapid transit lines with a total of 69 stations, over 149 bus routes, and 11 streetcar lines, of which 148 routes make 243 connections with a rapid transit station during weekday rush hours.
The TTC operates the third-most heavily used urban mass transit system in North America, after the New York City Transit Authority and Mexico City Metro. In 4th quarter 2012, the average daily ridership was 2.76 million passengers: 1,425,300 by bus, 271,100 by streetcar, 46,400 by intermediate rail, and 1,011,700 by subway. The projected 2013 ridership is 528 million riders. The TTC also provides door-to-door services for persons with physical disabilities known as Wheel-Trans; in 4th quarter, 2012, 9,800 trips were made through this service daily. The TTC employed 12,449 personnel on December 31, 2011.
TTC subway service has resumed from St. George to Lawrence West stations on Line 1 after a communication failure halted trains Friday morning. There are still residual delays. TTC spokeswoman Milly Bernal said service was interrupted because of the loss of radio communication between transit control and the subways. So it’s a safety issue when they can’t communicate. Other problems with the TTC stem from an overnight crash on Weston Rd. that closed the road in both directions at Sheppard Ave. and sent three people to hospital late Thursday night. Due to the ongoing investigation, TTC route 165 is diverting both ways. Police said the car involved in the crash was travelling at a high speed on Weston Rd. before it collided with another vehicle, flipping it onto a pedestrian island.
The male driver of the vehicle that was hit was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. Two other people were also taken to hospital. According to police, the driver of the speeding vehicle has been arrested for impaired driving. Otherwise, TTC and GO Transit are operating on schedule as are flights in and out of Pearson and Billy Bishop Airport. Meanwhile, the threat of rain will hang over the city throughout the day Friday, before returning this weekend. Environment Canada said there is a 40 per cent chance of rain Friday with a high of 13 C.
