The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), which claims to open more doors than any other English test, has added another dimension to its profile.
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), which claims to open more doors than any other English test, has added another dimension to its profile. The TOEFL's internet-based test (iBT) was made available to Indian students from April.
"The Education Testing Service (ETS) has fully launched the TOEFL internet-based test (iBT) at 161 test centres in 24 cities across India, with 52 more centres planned. We hope to increase access to the test and see significant growth in India as we open more test centres in smaller cities and remote areas of the country," said Gena Netten, strategic marketing head of TOEFL iBT, during her recent visit to the Capital.
When asked about the difference between TOEFL and TOEFL iBT, she said: "A spoken section has been added to the test. Also, the test asks students to integrate or combine their skills.
So, a student first may read a passage, listen to a lecture about the topic, and then be asked to speak or write
a response.
The online delivery allows us to provide a consistent testing experience for all test-takers, which is what makes the test more fair and objective.
The responses are sent via the internet to ETS' online scoring network, where the spoken and written sections are assessed. The multiple assessment of an aspirant's ability increases the reliability of the scores."
The TOEFL iBT test measures the ability to communicate effectively in an academic setting by combining four language skills — listening, speaking, reading and writing — just as one does in real life.
"When the test was created, ETS researchers went and recorded lectures and conversations. They took examples from student textbooks and designed the test tasks to reflect real-life tasks that students would do in an academic setting. Since the new test is more akin to real life, the scores are better indicators of students' ability to communicate effectively and, therefore, succeed academically," added Netten.
The TOEFL iBT test fee is Rs 6,780. Around 6,000 institutions worldwide accept the scores. "However in Australia, currently there are immigration policies that do not allow Indian students to present a TOEFL score to get a student visa.
Australian immigration officials are now examining this policy and it is likely that it will change by July 2007," said Netten.:SugarwareZ-191:
