Darren Kimura, President, Chief Executive Officer, Sopogy
Mr. Kimura is a 15-year serial energy entrepre-
neur. Over his career he created several com-
panies which he led to multimillion dollar suc-
cess and liquidity. Among his numerous start-
ups, Mr. Kimura founded Energy Industries, a
large energy services company where he led a
150-person international team, and Energy
Laboratories, a clean technology incubator. He
is experienced in acquisitions having led the
purchase of the Quantum Energy companies
and private placements having sold Energy
Smart News, Pacific Energy Services and
eControls.
He is an award-winning entrepreneur having been recognized as Emerging
Entrepreneur of the Year 2000, Inaugural Top 40 under Forty 2000, SBA
West Coast Regional Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2002 (California,
Hawai‘i and Arizona), Hawaiian Electric Trade Ally of the Year 2006,
Technology Leader of the Year 2006 and Green Entrepreneur of the Year
2007.
He is a recognized expert in energy efficient systems and has been a
speaker for the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection
Agency’s Energy Star Program. He is a Certified Energy Manager, Certified
Demand Side Manager, Certified Distributed Energy Professional and
Certified Sustainable Development Professional. He holds a B.B.A. from the
University of Hawaii.
Mr. Kimura’s board and directorship experiences include the chairman of
the Board of Directors for Sopogy, Inc., member of Hawaiian Electric’s
Integrated Resource Planning Committee, co-chairperson of the Hawaii
Energy Policy Forum, member of the State of Hawai‘i’s Department of
Business Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) Energy Advisory
Group, member of the Governors Innovation Council, co-chairperson on
Governor’s Capital Formation Committee, director at the Hawai‘i Strategic
Development Corporation (the State of Hawaii’s Venture Capital fund), direc-
tor at the Boy Scouts of America Aloha Council, director at the Hawaii
Science and Technology Council. He is also the chairman of the Board of
Energy Industries and is the president and chairman of Board at PLASMA,
the largest national association of energy service companies.
Francis S. Oda, Chairman, Group 70 International Inc.
Francis S. Oda is the chairman of Group 70 International, Inc., an architec-
ture, planning, and interior design firm in Hawai‘i with projects throughout
the Pacific. Dr. Oda is the chairman of the board of Global Smart
Infrastructures, Inc., a company designing, building and owning integrated
smart infrastructure for sustainable communities. He is also the senior pas-
tor of New Life Church Honolulu, a non-denominational Christian church.
He holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Cornell University, and a
Doctor of Architecture degree from the
University of Hawai‘i.
Dr. Oda is a Fellow of the American Institute of
Architects (FAIA) and Certified Planner (AICP).
Dr. Oda’s work in architecture and planning
shows a sensitivity to place and culture in
Hawai‘i and abroad. He coined the term
“kama’aina architecture,” meaning “architecture
of the children of the land.” He has spoken and
written extensively on the “Hawaiian sense of
place.” Additionally, Dr. Oda’s work has been
published in European and American journals
and is included in the books, Architecture in Hawaii, Architectural Guide to
the Bay Area and Religious Buildings. He has been recognized with over 40
design awards for his projects, including the national AIA Honor Award, the
highest award given for a constructed building in the United States.
Dr. Oda is an associate professor of the University of Hawai‘i School of
Architecture, and developed the Doctor of Architecture program. He is a
Manoa Forum Scholar of the University of Hawai‘i and was recognized as a
Distinguished Alumnus of University of Hawai‘i. He was installed into the
Hawaii Business Hall of Fame and also awarded the Humanitarian Award of
the Hawaii Chapter, AIA. Dr. Oda has served on numerous professional and
community boards including Pacific Rim Bank, Hawai‘i Visitors and
Convention Bureau, American Institute of Architects, Hawaii Youth for Christ,
Historic Hawai‘i Foundation, Lambda Alpha International Urban Land
Honorary Society, Aloha United Way, YMCA Metropolitan and The
Contemporary Museum.
