A brief report analyzing the case of an online portal. It initially starts off with the basic idea behind the online testing methodology and why it is gaining momentum. It then highlights the Business model of these online portals and also their revenue models.
TestURself.com Basis Idea: TestURself.com is an online portal for test series targeted at students intending to write engineering and medical entrance tests across India. It provides platform for testing and also in-depth analyses of test results. Background: State wise Common entrance tests are multiple choice questions and hence amenable to online testing.HRD ministry has also proposed a common entrance test from the year 2013 for all engineering and medical entrance across India. About 100000 students appear for the test every year in Karnataka alone. Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Kerala are other states where the numbers of students applying for entrance are similar. Currently entrance coaching is provided by coaching institutes like Brilliant tutorial and BASE. These institutes also provide tests series but the questions are limited to the in-house expertise available. Also no personalised feedback is given to the students. The marks obtained in the test are the only feedback. Some institutes like Brilliant Tutorials have adopted online test series but again the type of questions are limited to the in-house expertise and also the feedback provided is not personalised. Business Model: The suppliers of questions would be teachers and ex students who would like to have another revenue source. They would have to register through website or offline before uploading the questions on the website. They will upload it on the website. The students will also register for a fee and then take the tests and rate the tests. Depending on the rating, the question paper maker will be provided incentive. The website provides analyses of the student’s performance like section wise performance, areas of improvement, overall ranking of the student etc. There would be a online discussion room for each question paper where the student can clear his doubts from the maker of question paper.
