British retail major Tesco Plc has bought eight Makro Cash & Carry stores in Malaysia to almost double its selling space in that country. The Cheshunt, England-based company will ''move close to becoming market leader'' in Malaysia as a result of the purchase, Tesco said today in a statement. It didn't disclose the price. The acquisition adds more than 800,000 square feet (74,322 square meters) of sales area to Tesco's current 900,000 square feet in the country, where it has 13 stores. Malaysia is one of 12 nations the UK company has entered as competition increases at home, where it controls more than 31 percent of the market.
