A grand beginning and awesome audience response to the TEDx event organized by Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH) - Noida on saturday, 26/Nov/2011 in its campus premises.

The theme of the entire event was 'Freedom' on which speakers gave an 18 minutes TEDTalks on what freedom means to them as an individual. The turn up of the speakers was equally awesome as they were all famous personalities like Mr. Mahesh Bhatt, the bollywood film-maker, Mr. Pradeep Kashyap, the father of rural marketing and founder MART, Mr. Sanjay Trehan, CEO, MSN India, Ms. Julianne Wurm, Founder R3, New York; Mr. Shivendra Chauhan, Volunteer at India Against Corruption; Mr. Ajay Jain, a traveller, author, photographer & blogger; Jitendra Agarwal, CEO, Sarthak Educational Trust; Ms. Shubhra Chaturvedi, Artist & photographer; Ms. Manisha Ahlawat, Managing Partner & CEO, Rose Red Lifestyle LLP Master Franchisee, Vivafit; Mr. Ajit Sharma, Founder AWC Industries; and Mr. Mohak Mathur gave wonderful TEDTalks on freedom. Mahesh Bhatt started his talk with a question for audience to think over "are you free ?" and differentiated the sourced meaning of freedom from the real freedom individuals experience.

He talked about man's quest for permanence in life. He said every individual wants his pains to vanish quickly and pleasure to last forever. According to him the idea of ultimate freedom is a lie which the mankind has been told. He told the story of a parrot trapped by the king in golden cage then being taught the lessons of freedom. The parrot in the story crams up the lessons of freedom well but never himself experienced freedom from cage even after he died. With this the bollywood film-maker talked about the way human beings have all the sourced knowledge of freedom but never experienced themselves. He said generally humans have learned fascinated phrases of freedom but never experienced the one. He quoted instances from his own life and linked freedom to the pleasure as a human being. Mr. Sanjay Trehan, CEO, MSN India; linked freedom to invention of internet. He started his TEDTalks with the following quote from the nobel laurette Dr. Amartya Sen, " Development can be seen it is argued here, as a process of expanding the real, freedoms that people enjoy today." He talked about 'Peer to Peer communication" briefly quoted as P2P communication that advent of internet has made an individual's voice louder than it has ever been. He discussed how in just four years internet has expanded so fast to a huge user base that took thirty years for radio and ten years for television to get. He talked about how an individual is moving away from physical construct of the world to more a mental construct where he focuses more on his mental economy to grow with desires and empowerment. He told how internet has given individuals both personal & social freedom, so that whatever he wants to express to the world with the help of a single click and faster mode, he can publish it on internet and express it to as many people as he wants.

An individual has actually got freedom of speech. then he also talked about how internet is shaping social forces. Mr. Pradeep Kashyap, Founder MART, popularly known as father of rural marketing started his talks with instances from his own life. He told the audience how he followed his heart and left a lucrative corporate life to pursue his desire to work towards social empowerment. He talked about 'freedom from poverty for rural women' and told how the real life conditions with those women are and how MART helps in empowering them to overcome their hurdles towards development. He said women in rural India face lack of mobility, lack of education that result in lack of empowerment, low and irregular income, less productions so no economies of scale when it comes to compete the big retail brands, their lack of access to resources & market. He threw some light on how rural woman, who tries to earn her livelihood with domestically produced products, is cheated in terms of weight of the agriculture produce. He shared their real life problems when they have to compete with big retail brands for their agricultural produce and other domestically produced goods in the market. He told how MART operates to empower them and get them access to the market by providing these village people a value addition. He also told audience how these women are trained in doing business.

He talked about 'Project Shakti' by Unilever & co-founded by MART. He said all that that India needs is a business mind with a social heart. Mr. Ajit Sharma had one of the most entertaining TEDTalks where he talked about some communities in Rajasthan who spent time keeping a record of their patrons and their activities of the past. He talked about how that community used to keep contacting their relatives & other community members on a regular basis. He talked about this basic need of humans to keep in touch with the society around him, especially his loved ones and that's what freedom means to him. On the other hand, he shared some of his knowledge about the websites that help individuals keep sending messages to their loved ones and friends after their death. This was an entertaining TEDTalk enjoyed by most of the audience.

The other TED speakers for the day also gave wonderful talks like Mr. Ajay Jain talked about how travelling gives him freedom in true sense, Ms.Manisha Ahlawat talked about creating women only spaces, that gives some kind of freedom to women and she also quoted example from Delhi metro, Mr. Mohak Mathur talked about short films, Ms.Shubhra Chaturvedi quoted her life experience to explain what freedom means to her, Dr. Julianne Wurm talked about learning and questioned the importance of degree certificates saying they sometimes hamper freedom to learn. One of the most inspiring TEDTalk was by Dr. Jitendra Agarwal, who himself was a dentist by profession but had to change his profession due to sudden vision impairment. He talked about helping physically deficient people to earn their livelihood by providing them training. This was truly inspirational for audience present there, as to nothing is impossible in life. He shared his own experience of life how he struggled to train himself and work on computer as general people.

At the end there was an awesome performance by artists group Sharma Sisters. During the entire event various other TEDTalks were being played and simultaneously the tweeters & bloggers were updating the external world about the minute to minute updates of the event. Thus the entire event was awesomely enjoyed by the audience and it was a grand success.
