When in 2011 the Rector of Nyenrode Business University proposed to
hold the annual (E)ABIS colloquium on the premises in Breukelen and
André Nijhof proposed that the theme should be on Sustainability
and Finance, I immediately agreed.
Not only is Nyenrode amongst the top schools in the Netherlands,
but also the theme seemed very attractive and relevant.
Not everybody agreed, both in the business community and in
the academic community. The theme was somewhat alien to CSR
managers and CSR faculty, it was thought to be only relevant for
banks and the appeal was „too limited“. It shows how alien CSR
is practised and thought about in relation to the mainstream of
business.
Finance is at the heart of business just like the global financial
system is at the heart of the global economy and the corporate
finance course is at the heart of the MBA curriculum or any business
degree programme for that matter.
I congratulate the team at Nyenrode and our team at ABIS for putting
a programme together that addresses the core issues around the
financial challenges to master the sustainability transformation
which is our most pressing task ahead of us. A task which stretches
all along from the global arena, to regional areas, industry sectors,
companies and even our personal lifes.

BUSINESS & FINANCE
Nyenrode Business Universiteit is very much honored to host this
year’s ABIS conference. The theme is closely related to our core
values, Leadership, Entrepreneurship & Stewardship. The current
crisis and its vast influence on society at large underscores change
is needed and a new contract between business and society is
mandated. While being a leader or an entrepreneur, one should keep
a keen eye on the interest of all current and future stakeholders of
an organization. Major issues need to be addressed like internalizing
externalities; the cost of doing business can’t be transferred to new
generations. Business models will have to change to include the
bottom of the pyramid and ensure trust between all parties involved.
‘Leave no man (or woman) behind’ should be the motto of all of us.
In order to restore trust, transparency needs to be increased to
allow for reliable and meaningful integrated reporting. Finance,
and banking in particular, should be geared towards a smooth
flow of money through the system. Doing business in an ethical
manner means profits should be acceptable and allow sustainable
innovation. Business schools need to scrutinize their curriculum and
ensure educating ‘responsible leaders’ that will make a long lasting
difference. Surely, this is going to take some time. This Colloquium
will be just a step to discuss ideas and take them home to further
them. Anyone can make a contribution to make the world a better
place. Join us, participate, and enjoy. Have fun.

CON T E N T OF
THE PAR ALLEL SESSIONS
1
.1. Business for the Base of the Pyramid.
Core-theme 1: Social contract, Stewardship
In an interactive setting, Rutger Bults of IDH and Iqdal Quadir of Grameenphone discuss
developments with people at ‘the bottom of the pyramid’. How can they develop and
become part of supplychains and what could be a role for business to contribute to selfchosen development of that ‘BoP’? Grameenphone is an example of empowering and
enabling people to start their participation in economy. How could your company join
such interesting and promising business?
1
.2. Turnaround based on Cradle 2 Cradle.
Core-theme 2: Business-models, Entrepreneurship
From the perspective of an entrepreneur we will discuss the importance of having a
sustainable business model, the ingredients for its success and the necessity to build
a roadmap to create and control its impact on the organization. The case Desso will be
presented by its former CEO, Stef Kranendijk: a carpet-producing company which chose
to develop and implement sustainable production and marketing in order to survive a
financial crisis and build trust in future business. The session will be a case-based one.
1
.3 Corporate governance and investments.
Core-theme 3: Talent-development, Leadership
Paul Frentrop of Nyenrode and Giuseppe van der Helm of the Dutch Association of
Investors for Sustainable Development will debate interactively on questions regarding
governance of listed companies. Transparancy is required for investors, but is lacking on
a large scale. Transparancy also is an issue in the financial industry. But what governancemodels, or what requirements for it serve the investors and society at large in a way, to
prevent crises and to regain trust in (financial) business?
1.4. Paper-presentations: Integrated reporting
5 Paper presentations based on the Pecha Kucha’s format.
Paper details will be published on the day itself.
11
2
.1. Social Entrepreneurship: business case and
legal structure. Core-theme 1: Social contract,
Stewardship
The session will start with a short introduction by Mr. Henk-Jan
Beltman, the Chief Chocolate Officer of Tony’s Chocolonely. He
will explain the idea behind starting this business and elaborate
on the business concept and ambitions. The session will continue
with a presentation by Ms. Aikaterini Argyrou. She will present a
comparative study on the availability of legal structures for setting
up a social enterprise. After the two presentations, the audience will
have the opportunity to exchange views with the 2 presenters. The
session will be moderated by Tineke Lambooy and Hilco van Elten of
Nyenrode University.
2
.2. Telling the corporate story - Exploring
walk and talk. Core-theme 2: Business-models,
Entrepreneurship
Interactive debate with Robert van der Laan (PwC), Erik Roelofsen
(Erasmus University), Dick de Waard (RijksUniversiteit Groningen),
moderated by Olof Bik (Nyenrode). Questions on the table of this
interactive debate will be:
• Limiting the scope of reporting: relevance over transparency
• The art of writing: narratives and story telling
• Educating stakeholders: appreciating narratives
2
.3. Valuing non-financial performance.
Core-theme 3: Talent-development, Leadership
Roundtable on the ABIS laboratory on valuaing non-financial
performance. Led by Mike Polya (State Street) and Sander Tideman
(Nyenrode). The quest for inclusion of non-financial data in balancesheets and other business-information is a long one. This roundtable
with experts of business and academy will be a special one in the
sense that it contains findings of recent study, close to breakthroughs
in this quest.
2.4. Paper-presentations: Finance and business cases
6 Paper presentations based on the Pecha Kucha’s format.
Paper details will be published on the day itself.
12
3
.1. Sustainable finance: Past and future.
Core-theme 1: Social contract, Stewardship
Examples from the past include: obligatory caravaninsurance to support development of trade, life-insurances
to facilitate construction of infrastructure and insurance of
slaves to finance building of a harbor. More contemporary
examples include: insurances to support sustainable
production of agricultural commodities, pension-systems
to enable scaling of food-production, forestry-insurance to
support economic viability of forestry. What indications do
we foresee for the future of financial services from it? What
paradigm shifts would be needed to realize such a future?
This World-café is led by Toon Bullens (Nyenrode).
3.2. Paper-presentations: Business Innovation
6 Paper presentations based on the Pecha Kucha’s format.
Paper details will be published on the day itself.
3
.3. Five years after the collapse of Lehman.
Core-theme 3: Talent-development,
Leadership
Precisely five years after the collapse of Lehman, Bob
Hoogenboom (Nyenrode) together with tens of authors
published analyses and views related to this starting
point for the current financial crises. Many learnings
can be taken from this event. Hoogenboom will lead an
interactive session, in which the questions and insights of
the audience will be the guide into the past and the future
of corporates which should not, but possibly will fail in the
execution of their core-activities, their ‘raison d’être’. The
kaleidoscopic approach of the book guarantees wide views
as well as deep insights.
3.4. Paper-presentations: Business Innovation
5 Paper presentations based on the Pecha Kucha’s format.
Paper details will be published on the day itself.
13
4
.1. Trust in the future of business and finance.
Core-theme 1: Social contract, Stewardship
In this semi-open space debate, questions are on the table regarding ‘trust’. Why
trust? What is trust, what is its social function of trust and why is it so important in
the financial sector? What is institutional (hard evidence) and relational (soft) trust:
financial institutions pursue the former, but may be in much greater need of the latter…
What is moral repair: how to recover lost trust, and how to process the damages caused
by inflicted harm and broken (implicit and explicit) promises’. The workshop is a joint
production of Ronald Jeurissen, Edgar Karssing and Peter Verbaas (Nyenrode).
4
.2. Cooperatives and their governance.
Core-theme 2: Business-models, Entrepreneurship
Fishbowl discussion with Bas Rüter (Rabobank), Gert van Dijk (ICCO, Nyenrode) and Laurie
Dufays (World Savings Banks Institute). After the 2012 UN Year of the Cooperatives, this
very old (or very modern) type of business is in the spotlights as an alternative to listed
or privately owned companies. Is there truth in saying that cooperatives are more stable,
better to be compared with family-owned business? Is there limitation to the scale of
them? How many are there and why are they relatively unknown? Many other question
may come to this ‘fishbowl’.
4
.3. Talent development in executive education.
Core-theme 3: Talent-development, Leadership
Tom Cummings (Former Unilever, Nyenrode) on will lead an interactive session on
Leadership Landscapes, of which he wrote a book. Most of the books on leadership
written over the last 50 years have focused on how to lead where tasks are mainly internal
to the organization, and relationships between companies are straightforward market
or buy-sell transactions. Things have now changed dramatically. Tom Cummings looks at
the reality of most large-scale organizations, networks and constellations of today and
introduces the new concept of ‘Leadership Landscapes’.
4.4. Paper-presentations: Leadership and talent development
5 Paper presentations based on the Pecha Kucha’s format.
Paper details will be published on the day itself.
