The Internship with Stryker India PVT LTD, with its supply chain department, was a wonderful experience. Every day came with new challenges as well as opportunities to out-perform myself. My team was always willing to help me with every doubt no matter how trivial it was. Everyone in the office was approachable and willing to render help. The culture at Stryker is one of mutual respect and openness. There are no closed doors- you can walk right to the offices of the top managers and speak to them directly. The enthusiasm in the organization is highly contagious, which makes you want to go that extra mile. Also you get to interact with the very best in the industry and from day one you are entrusted to do things your own way. My summer internship at Stryker India was an enriching experience wherein I got exposure to the world class supply chain. I got an opportunity to work on analyzing the working of the supply chain by being with the very best brains of the industry. I had a wonderful experience as the only intern in the company. Working with a great team in Gurgaon, the entire team went out of their way to make me feel comfortable and included. The culture at Stryker really stood out. From day one I was made to feel like an integral part of the organization. The 9 weeks at Stryker India, working with the supply chain team, was a great learning experience. It took me some time to settle but once I did, I got to learn so much. The freedom to do things the way you want them to and the flat organization structure, where everybody is equal and approachable, really stood out. Good HR policies and a friendly, open office environment made it an experience I'll not forget in a hurry. It was March 19th, 2012 when I received word from Stryker India that I would be a part of their organization for my summer internship in Gurgaon, Haryana. With more than 21000 employees worldwide and $ 8.3 billion in annual sales globally and a fortune 500 company, Stryker Corporation is one of the best company to work with. Stryker Corporation is a Kalamazoo, Michigan based medical technology firm which produces medical implants, surgical and imaging technologies, as well as patient handling and emergency medical equipment.A Unique experience My first day, 2nd April, 2012 started in the warehouse with the “Annual Physical Inventory” count. On the contrary to my expectation, I was directly made the part of the counting process, even if it was my first day at Stryker. The counting process helped me to identify the different types of product the company has. I was really amazed to see the types of inventory the company was holding. It ranged from holding the screws, bolts to medical implants. It was a great learning experience. I landed in the company with no project in my kitty and I was told to identify my project. After a thorough investigation and getting support from the SCM team, I identified the project. It was on the Excess and Obsolete (E&O) inventory which the company was caring. This inventory was a loss for the company. This was not my first internship. I had done internship during my engineering too. And I knew what it means to be an intern. People don’t take you seriously, thinking you immature and just a college pass out. I knew that to be recognized I had to do something really fruitful for the company. I did it in my engineering internship and was offered a job. But this time the situation was different. I had only 2 months to do this in contrast with 6 months of the engineering internship. So I started finding a really challenging project which would be useful for the company als
ne day, while I was on with my project, I was called in for a meeting. The agenda of the meeting was to make a feasible solution for the tracking of the instrument sets whose item number fades away. The team unanimously came out with a solution for the problem, but because of its complexcity, it was difficult to be implemented. Then all eyes turned to me. They asked me if this project can be done. Of course it was difficult but it was not impossible. I said “yes” and took up the project and started working on it. This was the greatness of the organization which had a lot of trust in its employees. I was not even an employee but was entrusted with such an important project. The whole team was ready to give me the inputs I required. The management was waiting for this project for years and I knew that it was going to be a great learning opportunity which I have never had till now. These forces were enough for me to carry the project with full motivation. I worked day and night to complete this project on time. To make the project reach to perfection, I had the guidance of MR. Kamal Gupta, head supply chain. This project was then forwarded to the Head Quarter, Michigan, USA. After verifying the project, the headquarter gave a green signal to the project and was send to India for implementation. Now this project will be used by the company as a literature to track its instrument sets and eliminate considerable amount of losses. It will be used not only by the supply chain team but also by the Marketing team, the dealers as well as the suppliers. There was circulation of appreciation mails from the top management for completion of the project as the project was demanded for the last 3 years. It was a dream come true for an intern to get such a recognition and praise from almost every department of the company.Having earned the confidence of the management, then I got my third project. It was to do the time motion study of the workers and thereby do the efficiency mapping of the workers. I have successfully made a module by which the company will achieve it and also predict the number of employees they need as their sale increases..Now finally it was my turn to give some recommendation to the company. My fourth objective was to make the supply chain more efficient. I introduced a new technology called RFID, which would simplify the whole supply chain process and will help the company to save a lot of time. This technology was to be implemented in the warehouse which would be used by the company to track its inventory, reduce the time to track it and also to do it in a very efficient way. This would eliminate all the manual work done and make the warehouse world class and highly advanced. So it was a great experience and good opportunity to work on live projects. In short the 9 weeks at Stryker India was not only about work. It was an experience of mixed emotions wherein I made some good friends and also leant many management principles like employee engagement, motivation, and bonhomie and target achievement. Stryker India taught me a lot about the functioning of a central business unit and the co-ordination of units connected to it. I have once again realized how inspired I am by Operations department and how it is the right career path for me to pursue. To sum it up, my internship ended like a Hindi movie, a happy ending. It stated with fear of new place, work, free tea and lunch, and a little stipend but ended with friendship, fun, achievement, appreciation and a great learning experience.
