Management in all business and organizational activities is the act of coordinating the efforts of people to accomplish desired goals and objectives using available resources efficiently and effectively. Management comprises planning, organizing, staffing, leading or directing, and controlling an organization (a group of one or more people or entities) or effort for the purpose of accomplishing a goal.

DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS AND PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION
The Department of Industrial Relations and Public Administration was established to provide the needed human capital for both the public and private sector in Lagos State. The increasing demand for the study of Industrial Relations and Personnel Management and Public Administration with more emphasis on the theories and management of the Industrial, Personnel and Public sector as distinct from its usual position as an acreage of political science informed the establishment of the department. Objectives 1. 2. 3. 4. To give students an in-depth training in combating the challenges of the dynamics of the workplace. To equip students with the basic knowledge on how to solve management and administrative problems. To expose students to the variants of developed administrative system in Nigeria and the World in general. To expose students to both theoretical and applied knowledge in labour management and administration and to disseminate practical realities in the field of human resources management.

INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS AND PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT Industrial Relations and Personnel Management Programme: Bachelor Science (Honours) Industrial Relations and Personnel Management

PHILOSOPHY The Unit of Industrial Relations and Personnel Management was established to provide the basic knowledge and skills needed for the manpower requirements of the Nigerian economy. The general philosophy is to develop the mind, impart both theoretical and practical knowledge on individual to develop self-confidence, be innovative and self-reliant. The guiding principles of the department are excellence, truth, integrity and high moral value. Objectives a. To provide basic knowledge and skills needed for the understanding and analysis of problems related to the management and administration of industrial, commercial, public and other human organizations; b. To equip students of Administration and Management with the analytical skills needed for recognizing, defining and solving problems as well as training in decision making; c. To develop leadership and interpersonal relations skills in management; and d. To train students in the principles and techniques of organizational management and to ensure effective management.

Admission Requirements i) UME In addition to the General University admission requirements, candidates: must have passed 5 subjects at the credit level in the S.S.C.E/G.C.E or its equivalent, including English Language, Mathematics, Commerce, Economics and any other subject from the Sciences, Art or Commercial areas of study for the 4-year programme. ii) Direct Entry In addition to the General University admission requirement: Candidates for the Direct Entry programme should possess the five credit passes in the S.S.C.E./G.C.E. or equivalent examinations with at least two of the passes in the advanced level or four credits at least three of which shall be at the advanced level provided the subjects are not counted at both levels of the examination or in the alternative, candidates should possess a Diploma in Industrial Relations and Personnel Management with at least upper credit from the Lagos State University or any other University approved by the Senate of the University.
