Description
In order to tide over the pressures from external environment, banks must ensure that their internal operations are extremely efficient and effective.
Strategies for Turnaround of
Bank Branches

Bank Management
Pune, India
August 10 – 13, 2015
Coordinator
Prof Anjan Roy
Although the domestic economy today has become more stabilized
with lower in?ation and ?scal de?cits, business outlook for the banking
sector still remains challenging. Lower margin and interest income, as
well as high level of provisioning, have impacted pro?tability
signi?cantly. Banks’ ability to plough back earnings remains
constrained and some may have real concerns of meeting the needed
capitalization for pursuing their strategic growth plans.
In order to tide over the pressures from external environment, banks
must ensure that their internal operations are extremely ef?cient and
effective. In particular, performance of bank branches, in terms of
growing the retail business, acquiring low cost deposit as well as
managing the operating cost, must be raised to even higher levels.
Many banks, however, have a signi?cant number of branches that are
underperforming and are loss making. These branches not only pose
problem for pro?tability but also diminish the bank's capacity to grow.
The branches may underperform for several reasons such as
demographic changes in their command area market, stagnated
business mix, low level of productivity, poor management, etc. Many
such branches may be located in centers where banks are obliged to
continue to operate them in such state. Performance turnaround needs
branch managers who are able to identify the exact causes of under-
performance, as well as demonstrate leadership to pursue bold and
effective strategies to reposition these branches into the trajectory of
growth and pro?tability.
Objective
This programme intends to enhance the skills of branch
managers with the ability to undertake strategic analysis of
branch business with a view to identify relevant action plan
for achieving a quantum jump in their performance.
