socialist political thought in capitalist and global world

Socialist parties still enjoy significant support globally, and in some areas such as South America, rapidly growing support. The following of harsh liberal economic policy in most developing nations is generally imposed from without rather than voluntarily. The political and economic success of socialist policies in both Venezuela and Argentina has shown that there are alternatives to the Washington Consensus. And in the developed world too the departure of socialism has been greatly exaggerated. The US has never had notable socialist movements in any case (although many have described its agricultural policies as socialist). Elsewhere social-democratic parties are still major political forces, especially in Europe, and continue to represent the goals of the original socialist movements.

Socialist Party is the name of several different political parties around the world that are explicitly called Socialist. All of these parties claim to uphold socialism, though they might belong to different branches of the socialist movement and might therefore have different interpretations of what socialism means. Most of these parties advocate either social democracy, democratic socialism or even Third Way as their ideological position. Many socialist parties have explicit connections to the Labour movement and trade unions. See also Socialist International, list of democratic socialist parties and organizations and list of social democratic parties.
