SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY & THE YOUTH OF INDIA[/b]
The date was 26th January 2006. It doesn’t happen too often that a Bollywood movie releases on a Tuesday. But when you have people like Amir khan in the industry, then nothing should surprise you too much. Yes, it was the day when Mr. Rakyesh omprakash mehra came up with a revolution called “rang de basanti” with the tagline “a generation awakens”. Everyone [including our very own youths (that doesn’t exclude me)] enjoyed the movie, applauded and appreciated every individual performance with a glass of pepsi and popcorns to go with it. Theatres & multiplexes were jam packed with school & college students rushing in groups to take a feel of the revolution. Boys went crazy for DJ’s (dalijeet) hair style and girls were already in love with the way karan singhania smokes. This is it…!!! The rang de basanti effect remained effective until the man with torch opened up the exit gates & asked his fellow employee to work quickly as “agla show chalu hone wala hai”
Ok. Calm down. No one is asking you to “Be a rebel” & start a revolt against the system, but the question is like DJ & friends, can we do any good to the society? Can we devote a little time out of our busy schedules to try to understand the problems of our nation? Of our motherland? If the answer to the above questions is YES, then we are atleast standing on the right path if not heading towards the goal.
Being a part of an NGO which worked for the welfare of blind children, I remember an instance where in I went to write the answer paper of a special child called RD (his nickname in the class). He was a bright kid, was awarded numerous prizes by the government for his contribution towards the development of the city. Like everyone else he also wanted to achieve something big in life for his parents & for himself. But, unfortunately, he wasn’t privileged with any great teachers or mentors like we are. Ofcourse, there were some ‘bhayias’ & ‘didis’ who used to visit their hostel to teach them but there weren’t any permanent teachers for them. There are many RDs in our country who wants to do well, who wants to contribute for the nation but we youths are busy enough to understand our social responsibility. This is just one case which highlights the need of education but there are many others which have went unnoticed.
As they say, “Koi bhi desh perfect nahi hota, usse perfect banana padta hai”. There are numerous & numerous of problems that our society is facing today and is helpless in trying to find a solution to them. Right from problems like poverty, unemployment, hunger to education, malnutrition, improper sanitation facilities, girl & women trafficking, domestic violence and the list goes long, we youths can definitely make a difference. We, have the power, knowledge, resources, mind to work towards finding a solution to them or atleast to make sure that the government policies get implemented at the grass root level. There is a huge requirement of educated volunteers and we can be one of them.
We boast of one of the fastest growing economy in the world. But one should ask the question, is our growth inclusive? Measuring development on the parameter of affording a Mac Donald’s burger or a Baskin Robbin’s Sundae will not take us anywhere. Can we move ahead without taking ‘Bharat’ with us in the coarse of development? Answer is plain and simple. No, we cannot. It’s very easy and effortless to blame the government or policy makers if anything goes wrong, I am not against that, but one should do that, only after making sure that they themselves have done their part or duties expected out of them as a citizen of this country.
As in 2001, around 41.05% of the population of our country comprised of youths. It must have grown much larger by now. Youth power is considered to be the biggest asset for any nation & we are fortunate enough that we have ample amount of it.
To end, I wont be saying,”ab bhi jiska khoon na khaula, khoon nahi who paani hai” but to keep it very simple & straight, the need of the hour is just to make good use of our energies & enthusiasm. Taking up a social evil & working towards eradicating it from the society will only make our nation prosper.
So, Stand up. Be the change.
