smacking or spanking of children

Smacking is an ineffective way of disciplining a child. It provides children with no incentive to behave well. Furthermore, children who are too young to understand an explanation of why their behaviour is wrong are equally unlikely to be able to relate a smack to their supposed crime. In Germany, where the law on smacking was modified in 2000, smacking has declined and there has been a reported rise in disciplinary methods like television bans and reduced pocket money. A ban on smacking would provide a clear legal basis for the promotion of similar positive, non-violent forms of discipline, which reduce family stress and promote polite children.

Young children who are smacked by their parents grow up to be happier and more successful than those who have never been hit, research claims.
It found that children who are smacked before the age of six perform better at school when they are teenagers.
They are also more likely to do voluntary work and to want to go to university than those who have never been physically disciplined.

Psychologist Aric Sigman says: 'The idea smacking and violence are on a continuum is a bizarre and fetished view of what punishment is for most parents. If it's done judiciously by a parent who is normally affectionate and sensitive to their child, our society should not be up in arms about that. Parents should be taught to distinguish this from a punch in the face.'

I don't agree with parents who coddle their children who can do no wrong in their eyes regardless of their behaviour. I believe children need an authority figure and a guiding line in their lives and I see smacking/spanking as a way of upholding that need but that doesn't rule out diplomatic or "lesser" disciplinary actions.
Out of everything my most hated as a child was the cold shoulder or silent treatment where my parents would not speak or acknowledge me until they felt the message had gotten through. Most children hate not being acknowledge and I would almost have preferred them to smack me.
