The 4th HR Summit of Symbiosis Institute of Operations Management was held on 25th Aug’12 at “The Leela, Sahar, Mumbai”. The theme for this year’s summit was “Excellence in HR- an Operations Perspective”. The day started with the lightening of lamp by Dr Vandana Sonwaney, Director SIOM, Mr. Ravind Mithe, Executive Director (Operations Consulting), PWC.

Dr. Vandana welcomed the guests and talked about the marriage between the two very different fields- Operations and HR. Eminent speakers were present on the day to talk about an analytical framework which aims to explore the diverse fields of HR and Operations. The first keynote speaker of the day, Mr. Ravind Mithe, talked about problems faced by CEOs across the globe, how to increase confidence level and revenue growth. His quotes like- “people are not resources, they are purpose” and HR is “a war of talent” got a big round of applause from the audience.

After the high tea, first panel discussion on “Talent Building and Leadership Development” was carried on by Mr. Yashwant Bhaid, GM (HR), Nagarjuna Group and Mr. Sanjiv Deshpande, Faculty, SIOM. The second panel discussion was between Mr. Rajendra Abhange, Senior Director, Gabriel India and Mr. Sutanu Chowdhury, Vice-President & Head-HR, Mahindra Logistics Ltd on the topic - “Emerging Trends in HR practices”. Both the panelists engaged the audience with their invaluable experience.

The sumptuous and delicious lunch was followed by the third keynote speaker of the day, Mr. A.D. Burman, GM (HR), Maruti Suzuki India. A vibrant person, Mr. Burman, talked about “Change Management through leadership development”. He emphasized on the use of HR concepts like Johari window, 360 degree feedback in the progress of an organization. The third and final panel discussion on - “Changing Dynamics in Global Market: An HR perspective” included Ms. Deepika Ghosh, GM(HR),GSK , Mr. M.K. Gupta, DGM(HR), Bank of India and Mr. Sitaram Kandi, Human Resource Leader, GE India. The panelists were successful in keeping the discussion very interactive.

The day ended with the vote of thanks by Mr. Vishakh Bhan, Convenor, HR Summit. SIOM aims to present such enriching sessions in the coming years as well. Such sessions not only enlighten the students about the changing trends in global market with respect to HR and operations but also offer a platform for discussion to industry experts as well.

The central theme for this year's summit was "Excellence in HR- an Operations Perspective," aiming to explore the intersection and integration of these two distinct fields.

The event commenced with a lamp lighting ceremony led by Dr. Vandana Sonwaney, Director of SIOM, and Mr. Ravind Mithe, Executive Director (Operations Consulting) at PWC. Dr. Sonwaney formally welcomed guests and spoke on the "marriage" between Operations and HR.

Mr. Ravind Mithe delivered the first keynote address, focusing on global challenges faced by CEOs and strategies for increasing confidence and revenue growth. His notable quotes, "people are not resources, they are purpose" and HR being "a war of talent," resonated strongly with the audience.

Following a high tea, two insightful panel discussions took place:

  • The first, on "Talent Building and Leadership Development," featured Mr. Yashwant Bhaid, GM (HR) at Nagarjuna Group, and Mr. Sanjiv Deshpande, Faculty at SIOM.

The final panel discussion of the day, titled "Changing Dynamics in Global Market: An HR perspective," engaged Ms. Deepika Ghosh, GM (HR) at GSK; Mr. M.K. Gupta, DGM (HR) at Bank of India; and Mr. Sitaram Kandi, Human Resource Leader at GE India. This session was praised for its interactive nature.

The successful summit concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Vishakh Bhan, Convenor of the HR Summit. SIOM expressed its intent to continue hosting such enriching sessions in the future, recognizing their dual benefit: enlightening students on global trends in HR and operations, and providing a discussion platform for industry experts.
