SIGNIFICANCE OF PORT IN WATER TRANSPORT IN INDIA

There are ten major ports in the country. Mumbai, Kandla, Marmagoa, Mangalore, Cochin, are on western coastline while remaining five are Chennai, Vishakhapatnam, Paradip, Kolkata and Tuticorin are in the eastern coastline.


Besides there are 21 intermediate ports and 152 minor working ports. Mumbai is the leading port of India, located on the western coastline. It handles up to 25% of India’s total sea borne trade. It has natural harbour.


Main goods handled by Mumbai port are machinery, chemicals, crude oil, etc. As Mumbai is located on the western coastline it is nearer to European and African countries.


Ports are the gateways to India's international trade, handling over 90% of its foreign trade. In addition, a new port at Ennore, 25 km.north of Chennai has been constructed with Asian Development Bank's assistance and has been operationalised.


A scheme has been finalised, for joint venture formation between major and minor ports, without tender as well as between major port and company following tender route. Private sector investments have been facilitated and 17 projects worth more than Rs 4,500 crore, involving an additional capacity of 60 million tonnes have already been approved and are under different stages of implementation.


Another eight projects worth more than Rs 3,200 crore are under consideration .The process of phased corporatisation has been initiated for the major ports.
