Should alcohol be banned ???

anything beyond limits is hazardous.so is alcohol.but also we need to face the fact that majority of corporates do consume alcohol, and if you need to be in business and build relations you have to accept the fact and live with it. alcohol according to me should be restricted not banned

hey alcohol should nt be banned, even we dont consume it should nt be banned , if we keep on banning things, nathing would be left in life to enjoy [:P]

Heroin, LSD, and marijuana are prohibited in the United States today, in part on the ground that they are dangerous and in part
on the ground that they serve no useful medical purpose. The prohibition of the barbiturates, the nonbarbiturate depressants, and
the minor tranquilizers despite their potential hazards is rarely suggested even by antidrug extremists; their unquestioned
importance as medicines stands in the way. But what about alcohol? Should it not be banned on the same grounds that heroin,
LSD, and marijuana are prohibited?
Let us put aside the weighty arguments against alcohol prohibition, and try to consider seriously for the moment the arguments
in its favor.
Alcohol addiction is second only to nicotine addiction in incidence and prevalence in the United States today. A conservative
estimate is that five million Americans are alcoholics, but figures of as high as seven to nine million alcoholics and "problem
drinkers" are also cited. 1 Alcohol addicts are unable to refrain from their drug even though they decide to, want to, and try to
quit drinking alcohol; those who succeed for a time remain in imminent danger of relapse. * To the millions of alcohol addicts
must be added millions of "spree drinkers" who are not addicted but who get roaring drunk from time to time. Alcohol
prohibition, if enacted and effectively enforced, would keep these addicts and drunks away from their drug; and it would prevent
new cohorts of young people from becoming addicted or so it might be logically argued.
* It is commonly supposed that alcohol addicts, like narcotics addicts, are weak willed and that it is
their weakness of will that led them to become and to remain addicts. The evidence is superficially
plausible: even though two people may drink alcohol (or take barbiturates) in precisely the same
pattern, it is said, only one of them may become addicted. The difference between the two may not
be in strength of will, however; it is at least equally plausible to hypothesize a difference in enzymes or
in other biochemical factors distinguishing the metabolism of alcohol in the addict and in the similarly
exposed nonaddict. Nobody really knows. The preponderance of the evidence currently available
favors the view that the difference lies in the childhood of the two drinkers, in their social environment,
and in the stresses to which they are exposed as adults. But, as noted with respect to narcotics (see
Chapter 10), most researchers through the decades have been looking for psychological and
sociological evidence; it is hardly surprising (or convincing) that that is what they have found. If as
much research, energy, and ingenuity were devoted to the search for biochemical factors, the
preponderance of evidence might soon shift to the biochemical explanation. There has recently been a
small increase in biochemical studies of alcoholism, but it is still too early to review or evaluate the
findings here.

I think alcohol should be banned for many reasons:

1) only one or two drinks can impair your judgement and coordination needed to safely operate a car. some short term effects of alcohol are reduced inhibitions, loss of muscle control, memory loss or blackouts, nausea, vomiting, headaches, hangovers, and stupor (which is acting seriously disoriented and confused). The longer a person abuses alcohol the closer they get to becoming an alcoholic, which is a person addicted to intoxicated drinks.
2) long term effects of alcohol can include: liver cancer, women who drink increase their risk of breast cancer, memory loss, stroke, heart disease, changes in physical appearance, diabetes, and much more.
Physical effects of alcohol can range from annoying to life-threatening. The short term effects of alcohol consumption not only have consequences for the drinker, but can impact those around him or her as well. For example, the physical effects of alcohol can be experienced with only one or two drinks, and impaired judgment and coordination needed to safely operate a car can result in the drinker having an accident.

Alcoholism is a disease where consuming alcoholic beverages is at a level that interferes with the drinker's physical or mental health, and negatively impacts social, family or occupational responsibilities. Immediate physical effects of alcohol can happen ten minutes after drinking begins. With continued alcohol consumption on that occasion, the short term effects of alcohol consumption become more serious.

Here are seven of the short term effects of alcohol consumption:

1. Reduced Inhibitions - consuming alcohol changes behavior. At a blood alcohol level of 0.05, the drinker's behavior begins to change and be noticable. Physical effects of alcohol and reduced inhibitions can mean the drinker becomes more likely to engage in activities they would otherwise not participate in like sexual activity, continued drinking, drinking and driving or illegal drug use.

2. Loss of Muscle Control - at the level of 0.10, slurred speech will likely be one of the physical effects of alcohol. Impaired judgement and poor coordination are short term effects of alcohol abuse that can lead to falls and accidents.

3. Memory Loss and/or Blackouts - since alcohol depresses the brain's control mechanisms, as blood alcohol levels increase, periods of time and certain situations and events may not be remembered afterward.

4. Nausea, Vomiting - excessive alcohol consumption can result in the body attempting to protect itself by getting rid of the alcohol. Also, alcohol adversely affecting a person's sense of balance and orientation can lead to a feeling of nausea.

5. Headaches, Hangovers - these short term effects of alcohol can be felt a few hours after consuming alcohol. Hangovers are partially due to the body becoming dehydrated due to alcohol consumption.

6. Stupor - at a blood alcohol concentration of 0.40, a person can hardly function, acting seriously disoriented and confused.

7. Coma - at a blood alcohol level of 0.50, a person is at risk for coma, a life-threatening condition. And at this level or higher, respiratory paralysis and death become very much a possibility.

The longer a person abuses alcohol over time, the higher the chances of long-term physical effects of alcohol being experienced and alcohol dependency developing. The most severe form of alcoholism is called 'alcohol dependency'. Alcohol dependency can include an increased tolerance to the short term effects of alcohol, withdrawal symptoms when alcohol consumption is interrupted and by alcohol-related illnesses and diseases.

If you or someone you know may have problems with alcohol and would like to learn more about alcoholism, there are proven resources available. It is never too late to begin recovery from alcohol addiction and the physical effects of alcohol.

Many people already mentioned prohibition...this, again, would only lead people to produce alcohol illegally where it's production & consumption cannot be monitored. Being produced legally, there is quality control regulating its ingredients and sales can be monitored so it doesn't get into the hands of minors.

There is nothing wrong with consuming alcohol in moderation; in fact, having one or two drinks a day has many health benefits (especially good beer, as well as red wine).

There are alcoholics that cannot control themselves when it comes to alcohol. Banning alcohol will not prevent alcoholics from drinking; it will force them to rely on the illegal activity of acquiring & producing bootlegged alcohol that is not regulated and can be very dangerous.

Education is important...we should be teaching older teens & young adults to respect and appreciate alcohol in moderation (if they choose to partake), not making it taboo. Making alcohol a forbidden thing only forces kids to binge drink on their own away from parents and responsible adults who can regulate it.

The alcohole should not be banned, but some restriction must be applied over it. As we can see in Gujarat, Govt. banned alcohole, But after getting there, anyone can get alcohole at easy cost.
So banning is not a solution. :becky:

Hi,

Alcohol cannot be banned but the production of alcohol can be controlled through policy measures and government interventions, the most important aspects by which this can be achieved through the below measures

1. Containing the movement of raw materials through check points.

2. High taxation measures on raw materials

3. Stringent laws in terms of movement of alcohol from one check points to another

4. A committee can be formed for anti alcohol measures, where the committee will report directly to the center on the affairs of such units and the center with help of the committee can initiate actions which can help reducing alcohol production

5. Government owned recreational centers and alternative products to alcohol needs to be identified and promoted.

It should not be banned because it encourages illegal alhocol preparation. It leads to serious problems for both society and individuals.
Instead of banning, the people can be educated and informed about the problems and the government should take some steps to prevent people from drinking.

no not at all ....i dont think so.. if alcohol is banned in anywhere.....it direct affect the economy and i must say....its the matter of choice.....everybody has power of thinking.. so people can take it after knowing it is injurious to health....

it should nt be banned as it gives lot of revenue generation for the govt as a high tax imposed on it what i think " our govt can fix a limit for the distribution of alcohol just like the ration sysytem if they can do it '

i think tht banning alcohol is not a solution regarding problem caused due to :SugarwareZ-296:

alcohol and its not even easy thing to banned alcohol

instead of tht certain measures or limit should be fixed in tht matter !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:SugarwareZ-263:

Banning alcohol will just make it the forbidden fruit make it even more derirable to individuals of all ages which will not serve the purpose . It might also lead to abuse with more potent substances which will do more harm . Consuming such items is an intrinsic desire of the human race and cannot be banned until a drastic event occurs resulting in a drastic change in mindset

DEFINETLY IT SHOULD BE BANNED. THERE IS NO POINT TO USE IT TO GET GOOD CIVILIZED PEOPLE, HIGH EFFORT MAN, GOOD THINKING, HEALTHIEST SOCIESTY FROM DRUNKEN SOCIETY.

we need to ban alcohol, caffeine, rollercoasters, cars, steaks cooked less than well done, sushi, knifes, sharp point scissors, electricity, sharp pieces of glass, rocks of throwing size, and boards with nails in them.

Only in this way can people be safe. We should all be put into matrix tubes and used to power computers who will keep us physically healthy all our lives, though we may be very bored, what's the harm, right? At least we're living long!
