ok guys dis is NOT a college festival, nor a seminar/lecture/workshop. the context was such dat i thot shud be best put under dis forum....
Shanessa is basically a youth organiztion initiated in December 2005 to help the lesser priveleged sections of the society by Pooja ganeriwala, a student of tybms jaihind college(dats me!) along with 4 friends from mithibai college. Today we work with 70 members coming from various colleges all over the city- HR, Nm, Mithibai, Raheja, Rithambara, UPG, KJ Somaiya, National,a lot others and some who are working too.
It's been a year that we have been around and the following is a brief of what we do or have done in the past which also in some ways defines the purpose of our existence.
1. We hold regular events for orphans, the mentally or physically challeged n others. Picnics, parties or anything that would make them happy.
2. In may 2006, Shanessa decided to do something about illiteracy- a cause most of its members felt strongly about. today we run a small street school/class for children coming from the slums, providing them with informal education.
We have about 25 children who live in the slums at Milan Subway at santacruz west come from monday-friday 3-5 pm to The laxmi Narayan temple compund at scruz west again to study the basics of the english n hindi language n a bit of grammar n math too.
3. Since we are an unregistered student organization, raising funds has to be an ongoing process and we organize regluar events as fund raisers.
4. One of our primary objectives is to get the vast student population to become aware of thier responisbilities. We also carry out drives to raise awareness like organizing desks at college festivals and awareness walks.
One example would be the rally organized on the 15th august, wherin we had over 200 people walk with us alongwith celebs like mandira bedi, shreyans talpade, rajeshwari n varun badola to rally against illiteracy and support our cause.
our Latest project is Vivaan- an open talent show for street children, wherin children from various NGO's whill put up performances like group dances, skits, etc to an audience of about 1000people at the manik sabagraha auditorium at bandra reclamation. The highlight of the event is a special fashion show put up by the Shanessa street children where they will walk alongside bollywood stars like Jackie shroff and Amisha Patel.
Managememt Paradise is a congregation of management and other students who stand for today's youth-opinionated, aggressive, aware and wanting to bring about a positive change. Shanessa provides all you people who'v wanted to do something for the lesser priveleged but never got a chance to, an opportunity to do your bit.
We wanna break away from the minset that social work is for the elderly n the boring. We'r regular college-goers, who work hard, party harder yet haven't forgotten what it is like to bring a smile to someone else's face. There is no legal recognition we enjoy, no lofty constitutions, no set of rules. We work to make somebody happy n do the best we can.
I will look forward to any kind of help from all yu people and most importantly for people to become a part of us to further our cause.
Also for any further doubts or clarifications or enquiries, i'l be glad to answer either in this forum or personally.
Looking forward to responses people.
Pooja.
