General Purpose
Reporting to the AVP Finance the Senior Director leads a team that provides strategic, analytical, and
systems support for a wide-variety of projects aimed at optimizing the utilization of Yale’s resources, and
serves as the chief steward of the University’s financial systems, business intelligence, and data.
In addition to providing business leadership for core finance systems, the Senior Director is responsible
for leading the development and implementation of a business intelligence vision and strategy on behalf
of Finance and Business Operations that improves the quality, timeliness, and relevance of information
and facilitates the delivery of high quality analytics and reports to decision-makers at Yale. The Senior
Director serves as the chief steward of the University’s financial systems and data. The Senior Director is
also responsible for promoting and demonstrating the value of high quality business analysis by providing
analytical support for strategic projects around the campus that lead to key decisions.
Essential Duties
•
• Lead the development and implementation of a business intelligence vision and strategy on behalf
of Finance & Business Operations that improves the quality, timeliness, and relevance of
information available to decision makers at Yale
o Work in close partnership with the Information Technology Services (ITS) division to
model and align administrative data capture and infrastructure with the needs of
administrative decision makers, and raise the quality of data through improved data
governance and business process improvement.
o Work in close partnership with ITS to develop analytical and reporting technologies that
meet the needs of decision-makers and other stakeholders
o Develop a framework that aligns information delivery systems with customer
characteristics, capabilities, and demand for information
o Lead business intelligence initiatives; work with ITS, business subject matter experts, and
academic units to create collaborative solutions for delivering information that enhances
strategic decision making, performance monitoring, and internal controls
o Identify and prioritize high value business intelligence solutions that meet the strategic
needs of the organization
o Coordinate the work of various business and technical groups on the development and
deployment of data structures, tools, and applications.
o Develop marketing and communications programs that promote awareness of data,
available technologies, and available support for leveraging data
o Develop training programs to improve business intelligence skills of the community;
including query/report writing, analytical, visual display, and use of technical tools
o Serve as change management leader to drive the standardized use of data throughout the
organization

• Serve as chief steward of the University’s financial systems and data
o Lead the development and implementation of a vision and strategy for the use of
technology to support the University’s financial activities.
o Act as the voice of the financial process owners and financial system users in the
governance of enterprise financial systems; work in close partnership with central
Finance and school/unit finance stakeholders to understand, prioritize, and implement the
use of technology to support business needs.
o Work in close partnership with ITS on the prioritization, implementation, enhancement,
and maintenance of enterprise financial systems
o Work with financial process owners and users to modify business processes in order to
enhance the usage of financial systems and meet stakeholder needs
o Work in collaboration with function leaders to control access to financial systems;
maintain access policies and procedures
o Ensure users of financial systems receive high quality training that encompasses both tool
training and business process awareness and facilitates high quality financial
management at Yale.
o Work with ITS to ensure financial systems are available to users and maintained on an
ongoing basis.
o Provide ad-hoc reporting assistance to the financial user community
o Serve as steward of university financial data; partner with ITS to develop and maintain
financial data warehouse, data definitions, and data governance. Maintain financial data
governance policies and procedures

• Provide consulting and analytical support for strategic projects around the campus that lead to key
decisions
o Plan and execute internal consulting and analytical engagements, informed by a clear
understanding of the issues, options, and supporting high impact analysis.
o Identify and prioritize opportunities to provide consulting and analytical support to
maximize the impact of available staff and other resources.
o Build relationships among campus leaders as a trusted advisor and provider of high
quality consulting and analytical support for high impact, complex projects.
o Deliver high quality consulting and analytical supports for the most important priorities
of senior campus leaders, providing recommendations that are regularly adopted and have
a significant impact on the University’s mission.
o Foster a culture where decision-making is supported by high quality, timely, and relevant
analysis; build skills, knowledge, and a sense of community among analysts on campus.
Skills and Experience
?
? Bachelor's degree required; Bachelor degree in finance, business management, or accounting
preferred. MBA, CPA, CMA or equivalent advanced degree preferred
? Minimum of seven years of administrative leadership experience is required
? Advanced knowledge of and experience with financial operations and analysis; audits, budgeting,
forecasting and modeling, and high-level strategic planning skills is required.
? Strong understanding of academic administration and decision making; Yale University
experience as the Lead Administrator for a school or unit is strongly preferred.
? Well-developed managerial, decision-making, planning, organizational, problem-resolution and
leadership skills; demonstrated ability to manage and develop people and organize effective task
forces and project teams; excellent written and oral communication skills.
? Experience with development and implementation of management reporting systems and
dashboards.
? A solid understanding of internal control concepts and the implementation of internal control
systems in a complex business environment.
? Proficiency with personal computers to include word processing, database, and spreadsheet
applications is required. Familiarity with enterprise administrative systems is required.
? Experience with SCT Banner and Oracle EBS is highly desirable.
