The Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that students unhappy with their examination scores - class X and XII, entrance exams for professional courses as well as job recruitment tests - can take a look at their answersheets by moving an application under the Right To Information (RTI) Act.

So far, only re-tabulation of marks was possible. Now, the court has provided for re-evaluation of answersheets, which will also reveal if the examiner missed out on awarding marks for some answers.

The path-breaking order was passed by a bench of R V Raveendran and A K Patnaik who dismissed appeals filed by the CBSE and West Bengal Board of Secondary Education among others, challenging rulings by different information commissioners directing them to show the answersheets to the students.
