STRATEGIC is a Kenyan company specializing in research, public relations and mass media monitoring consultancy services for a wide range of clients ? corporations, trade associations, governments and even some non?profit advocacy groups in East and Central African region. The company has over ten years experience in designing, conducting and managing research, media monitoring and public relations programmes in social and environmental issues, governance and development. Registered as a private company in 1996, STRATEGIC’s mandate includes but is not limited to implementing PR related activities and surveys, carrying out knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAPs) surveys, market surveys, socio?economic surveys and public opinion surveys among other specific surveys. STRATEGIC has three major departments. These are the Research, Public Relations and Media Monitoring departments. How We Work STRATEGIC has client?focused teams for each project with direct involvement in all projects. In all our projects we ensure the project members have face?to?face executive briefings, well trained team leaders and enforce high standards of work. On every assignment a supervisor is appointed among the field team members who keeps track of their activities and ensures that the daily assignments have been accomplished. The executive in charge of projects coordinates all the field members and conducts regular physical checks to identify areas of need and rectifies accordingly. Our teams are categorized according to the functions they have to perform, they report to the office with feedback on the days’ activities and weekly meetings held to come up with new ways of tackling assignments. The Media Monitoring department’s mandate includes monitoring coverage of various issues for both electronic and print media. It involves capturing all issues pertaining to the subjects under monitoring and scientifically reporting on the coverage. We agree beforehand with the client on the items to be captured and the media outlets and programs to be monitored. The variables looked at in monitoring include but not limited to:

Monitoring Methodology The methodology to be used will largely depend on what types of outlets are being monitored. Several issues could be monitored. The surveys that have been carried out from 1997 to date have been undertaken under strict deadlines and have at times involved samples of 3,000 respondents. Conducted annual General Consumer Survey for the Nation Media Group throughout East Africa. The annual survey seeks to establish the consumption patterns and preferences of consumers. The survey is conducted annually and simultaneously in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Nation Media Group – Employee Satisfaction Survey Conducted an employee satisfaction survey which researched NMG employees in the print, electronic and courier divisions. ________________________________________________________________________ Konrad Adenauer Stiftung ? East African Stakeholders Opinions on the revival of the East African Community ? 2001 Scope: Regional (Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania) Conducted a Stakeholders Survey that sought to establish the response (participation, knowledge and attitudes) of East Africans to the revival of the East African Community. It also gathered and analyzed empirical data to inform the growing discourse on the need for and sustainability of the East African Community. The survey involved interviewing 3,000 respondents in Nairobi, Mombassa, Kisumu, Malaba, Namanga, Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mwanza, Kyotera, Kampala, Mbale, and Masaka. Results of the survey were published in the East Africa Occasional Papers published by Konrad Adenauer Stiftung. ______________________________________________________________________________ CRADLE ? The Cradle human Trafficking Survey 2006 Scope: Nationwide The CRADLE commissioned Strategic Public Relations and Research Limited (SPR&R) to conduct Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and In?depth Interviews (IDIs) as well as analyze quantitative data collected from a Human trafficking study between the months of December 2005? February 2006. This was a baseline survey to inform on the status of human trafficking in Kenya. The study included facilitating a children’s forum, and IDIs with various stakeholders from both the government and non?governmental organizations as well as quantitative interviews. ________________________________________________________________________ AMREF (K) HIV/AIDS Documentation project Evaluation and Monitoring 2005 Scope: Regional (Kenya, Uganda) SPR & R was contracted to carry out the mid term evaluation of this documentation project the process involved evaluation of the study objectives, assessing the documentation process, documentation of successful case studies and suitability of replication of the same programmes in the programme areas. The evaluation project took three months and was carried out in Kenya and Uganda.

Local Authority Service Delivery (LASDAP) Survey ? 2004 Scope: Nationwide The project involved evaluating and assessing the implementation of the Local Government Reform Programme In Kenya. The aim of the project was to evaluate awareness levels of the LASDAP project among the population and the local authorities, establish and evaluate public response, Review policy guidelines underpinning LASDAP and recommend strategies for gender mainstreaming and inclusivity in the LASDP project. The evaluation consisted of a Desk research, In?depth Interviews and focus group discussions and took three months. ________________________________________________________________________ Ministry of Water Resource Management and Development & GTZ Kenya ? Water Sector Reforms Kenya 2004 Scope: Nation wide The research for the Ministry of Water Resource Management and Development in conjunction with GTZ Kenya involved a situational analysis meant to feed into the development of a communication strategy for the water sector reforms. This involved assessing and establishing the attitudes and perceptions of Kenyans on the commercialization and restructuring of the water sector. The survey results included indepth analysis of attitudes and practices of the people in the water sector. The research methodologies included, Desk research, content analysis, qualitative focus group discussions, indepth interviews and a quantitative survey. The results of this study is currently being used in the development of the National Water Sector Reforms Communication Ministry of Water, Lands and Environment (Uganda)? Survey 2004 Scope: Nation wide (Uganda) The general objective of this assignment was to provide information that formed the basis for a well?informed communication strategy. The focus of the study was to identify and validate the options open to the government in proceeding with the next phase of its communication programme in terms of strategy, messages, utilization of appropriate media and its ability to monitor the progress of this programme and evaluate its results. Based upon the results of this study, the government wished to make strategic decisions regarding the future objectives and guidelines of its public communication program in support of the water sector reforms. The research was both qualitative and quantitative. It included desk research, focus group discussions and a quantitative survey. It also involved facilitating a special dissemination workshop through which concerns of special interest groups such as civil society organizations could be easily sought. The Jamaa Wazima Mid term evaluation project 2003 Scope: Siaya District (13 sub locations) and Busia District (4) sub locations SPR & R was contracted to carry out the mid term evaluation of the Jamaa Wazima project implemented by CARE Kenya in Siaya and Busia Districts. The evaluation of the project involved overall assessment of the achievements by the project based on the standard evaluation criteria for projects, which entailed assessment of relevance, effectiveness, efficiency, sustainability and impact taking into account existing relevant government policies and the environment where the project is being implemented. The process of evaluation further involved analysis of project experience, achievements against set targets, synthesis of challenges and derivation of lessons learnt and interpretation of implications for the remaining period. ________________________________________________________________________ The Child Effective Media Project (CAEMP) June 2002 Client: Plan Kenya Scope: Chonyi,Kilifi,Kivaa,thika,Nduru Kadero and Moyeni The project involved evaluating and assessing the implementation of the Chile effective media project by Plan Kenya. The purpose of the evaluation was to asses the degree to which the project has met its objectives. February 2006. This was a baseline survey to inform on the status of human trafficking in Kenya. The study included facilitating a children’s forum, and IDIs with various stakeholders from both the government and non?governmental organizations as well as quantitative interviews. ________________________________________________________________________ AMREF (K) HIV/AIDS Documentation project Evaluation and Monitoring 2005 Scope: Regional (Kenya, Uganda) SPR & R was contracted to carry out the mid term evaluation of this documentation project the process involved evaluation of the study objectives, assessing the documentation process, documentation of successful case studies and suitability of replication of the same programmes in the programme areas. Water Sector Reforms Kenya 2004 Scope: Nation wide The research for the Ministry of Water Resource Management and Development in conjunction with GTZ Kenya involved a situational analysis meant to feed into the development of a communication strategy for the water sector reforms. This involved assessing and establishing the attitudes and perceptions of Kenyans on the commercialization and restructuring of the water sector. The survey results included indepth analysis of attitudes and practices of the people in the water sector. The research methodologies included, Desk research, content analysis, qualitative focus group discussions, indepth interviews and a quantitative survey. The results of this study is currently being used in the development of the National Water Sector Reforms Communication Ministry of Water, Lands and Environment (Uganda)? Survey 2004 Scope: Nation wide (Uganda) The general objective of this assignment was to provide information that formed the basis for a well?informed communication strategy. The focus of the study was to identify and validate the options open to the government in proceeding with the next phase of its communication programme in terms of strategy, messages, utilization of appropriate media and its ability to monitor the progress of this programme and evaluate its results. Based upon the results of this study, the government wished to make strategic decisions regarding the future objectives and guidelines of its public communication program in support of the water sector reforms. The research was both qualitative and quantitative. It included desk research, focus group discussions and a quantitative survey. It also involved facilitating a special dissemination workshop through which concerns of special interest groups such as civil society organizations could be easily sought. Media Monitoring – 2007 General election Client: UNDP Elections Assistance Programme Scope : All Media Nationally Strategic supported the objectives of the UNDP Assistance to the 2007 General Elections in Kenya programme by monitoring if various media were fair and accurate media in reporting on electoral issues evidenced by improved electoral coverage in terms of balance, accuracy, impartiality and fairness. Strategic did pre election , during and after the election and this was measured by, among other things, objective, neutral, accurate and comprehensive media monitoring. Media monitoring was also crucial to assess compliance with agreed Codes of Conduct and standards for access to media by political parties.
