(i) Run for Unity : 6.00 am
Following a call from our Prime Minister to celebrate 31
st
October as Ekta Diwas to
commemorate the 139th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Sports
Committee along with the college administration strived to support the cause in the best
way possible.
Arrangements were made to allow IIMA students, professors and staff to participate in the
Run for Unity being held in Ahmedabad. The response from the community showed the
immense enthusiasm and the hope the community pinned on our new Prime Minister.
At the day of the event, nearly 70 odd people including international students on exchange
programme turned up braving the chilly air and getting up before the son rose. All of us
assembled at 0530hrs. It was refreshing and encouraging to see participation from all sects
of our community, so much so that even exchange students were drawn into it.
Transportation was arranged by the institution and each participant was also given a tshirt.
All in all, I do believe the run achieved its objective, it did bring the community closer.
(ii) Photo Exhibition on “Rashtriya Ekta Divas” – 10:00 a.m.
On occasion of 139th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, popularly known as
"Iron Man of India", IIMA has celebrating “Rashtriya Ekta Divas” on 31st October 2014.
Perspectives, the photography club of IIMA has organized photo exhibition on Sardar
Vallabhbhai Patel's contribution in freedom struggle and his political and personal life.
Prof. Ajay Pandey, Dean, IIMA and Cdr. Manoj Bhatt, Chief Administrative Officer, IIMA
have inaugurated the exhibition on 10 AM of 31st October 2014 at the Perspectives Photo
Gallery at the institutes’ campus. Many visitors have expressed that the pictures and the
write-ups shown in the exhibition have evoked their emotions of the time of freedom
struggle and the crucial time of divided India where Sardar Patel has played a major role in
uniting the princely states. The Gallery has witnessed more than 800 visitors on the first
day itself including students, faculties, staff and outside visitors. The exhibition will
continue to stay in place for 3 days up to 2nd November 2014.
(iii) Screening of Documentary film on Sardar Patel: 2:00 p.m.
As part of the "Rashtriya Ekta Divas" programmes, MAD, the movies club of IIMA
screened documentary on Sardar Vallabhai Patel made by Doordarshan. Faculty, staff and
students attended the documentary screening on the Iron man of India. The 20 minute
documentary featured the role of Sardar Patel in the Indian freedom struggle. We could
connect to his role in raising awareness for the Dandi march and eventual imprisonment in
Sabarmathi Jail as we were sitting just a few kiometers from Sabarmati. The second half of
the documentary showed the even bigger role of Sardar Patel in the building of new India.
He was responsible for bringing nearly 500 princely states into one united country and was
rightly called Iron Man of India for his diplomatic skills.
(iv) IIMACTS Write-Up for celebration of '?????? ???? ????' - 5:30 p.m.
IIMACTS, IIM Ahmedabad Cultural & Theatrical Society, performed a short street play
titled ‘Ranjish’ on the eve of ‘Rashtriya Ekta Divas’ on 31 Oct, 2014. The street play was
written by the IIMACTS team and directed by Ajay Kumar, the Coordinator of IIMACTS.
Against a background of communal hatred which heightened at the time of India’s
partition, the play aimed at portraying the issues which have for decades plagued the
country and are also currently the reasons behind dividing our country in various forms.
These issues range from coldness between people from North and South India, the
negligence towards Backwards and Tribal, the animosity towards those from North-Eastern
and Kashmir regions; to the demands for making new states, land and water conflicts
between states and claims made by several marginalized groups across the country.
The eventual message is that today we truly need another Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel who
can save the nation from breaking apart due to these issues; someone who could be
sensitive to needs of different sections of the society and yet firm enough to take bold
actions in the welfare of the nation.
(v) Reading of Pledge and collective singing of National Anthem – 5:40 p.m.
The Rashtriya Ekta Shapath was read by Mr. Ajay Kumar, Second year student of Post
Graduate Programme and was followed by the Faculty members, Staff and Students in
Louis Lahn Plaza of the institute.
(vi) A Panel discussion on the contribution of Sardar Patel to national unity, safety and
security. – 6:00 p.m.
Topic for discussion: Safeguards for unity and integrity of India
Panelists: Anurag Singal (PGPX)
Prathamesh Chaudhari (PGP2)
Ratnendu Ray (PGP1)
Themes that were explored during the discussion:
? Given the diversity and heterogeneity of India, is India really united?
? What can we learn from our past about India’s unity and diversity?
? Are politicians dividing the country for their political gains?
? Is reservation one of the root causes for groupism in India?
? What are the safeguards which keep the country united?
? What sort of policy measure and action is necessary for protecting the unity and
integrity of India?
Outcome of discussion
We had a healthy discussion to try and understand the current social, political and
economic scenario prevalent in India, the factors that led to divide in the society on lines of
caste, creed, religion and economic status
The safeguards for unity and integrity that came out from the discussion were education,
mass media, cricket, bollywood and too some extent even reservations.
(vii) A Poem on Sardar Patel by one of the Post Graduate Programme students, Mr.
Saurabh Kumar Pandey: - 7:00 p.m.
