Small Screen News :
Need to restrict reality TV
STAR TV, Zee TV, Sony are some of the established and popular entertainment channels. They have everything for their viewers, ranging from sagas to comedy to horror.

A new range that has come up is that of reality shows. The channels make it a point to show the clippings of the contestants fight throughout the day. Many tabloids refer to these acts as scripted and mere publicity stunts. But, what’s wrong in using these stunts if viewers are enjoying it?

Coming to reality shows, everyone is in the spell of these nowadays. You ask for it and they are ready with everything in the form of reality shows based on singers or dancers or comedy. There are shows showcasing the talent of children, to shows based on celebrities. It’s not just great performances but one also gets to enjoy the difference of opinion between the judges and contestants.

The pioneer of these shows was Indian Idol. Though there were some other reality shows before Indian Idol, but the spell of reality shows on the the Indian audience began after Indian Idol. It was a new concept in our country, because the final decision was in the hands of the viewers ie the winner was decided on the basis of voting by the viewers. The viewers had the power to make or break the future of the contestants. The entire idea of Indian Idol was copied from American Idol and the concept was successful in marking a new beginning in the Indian television scenario. After the popularity and success of Indian masses, other channels did not lag behind in launching these reality shows for their channels. Today, these reality shows are ruling the market.

Initially, the reality shows were meant for the masses. Now, a new dimension has been added to these shows ie celebrity reality shows, in which the celebrities are the contestant. These shows are hot topics of discussion in school and colleges. The celebrity tag attached to any show is bound to take off. India is a star struck nation. They always want to know about the happenings in the personal life of these stars, so these shows are a instant hit with the masses. These shows are called reality shows because these are based on the decisions of the masses and the final call is based on these decisions. But how real are these shows? Are they actually based on the decisions of the masses? There have been questions surrounding the authenticity of these shows. Many people believe that the final results are manipulated and the shows are more about television rating points (TRP).

Another dark side to these reality shows is the sharp comments and criticism received from the judges. Many contestants lose their confidence when they are subjected to harsh comments. In one of the past incidents, Shinjini Sengupta of Kolkata lost her ability to speak and move after she was shown the door in the elimination round of a reality show.

Many good singers do not win due to the voting system as people vote on the basis of regions. The viewers prefer that a contestant of their state should win. In this case, talent takes a back seat. Reality shows seem to be the new age entertainment recipe. They might be selling controversies or cashing upon peoples emotion; but at the end of the day, they are the most poplar shows with the highest TRPs.

What was once occupied by TV Serials has passed on to Reality Shows now.. I don't think there is much we can do abt it, if not, worry.. But nowadays, Reality in the Reality shows have been more predicatable.. I think there are in short of scriptwriters..anyone willing to apply???!!!

ANY WAYS THEY R REALLY COOL INDIAN TV VIEWERS NEEDS SOMETHING SPICYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY WHICH R PROVIDED BY THESE SHOWS...........

does it matter if it's real or not?
more interesting is the audience...in germany (my home country) reality shows are seen by the lower class as well as by the middle and upper class. it is a medium to create and affirm prejudices towards the lower class (since 80% of the participants are working class members).
therefore - at least in western europe and the US - it's not just entertainment it's a vehicle to sell political and social view points.

That gives a totally new dimension to the topic lynni.. would like to hear more of how it works in germany!

well, in germany the people who appear in reality shows are usually from the lower class
assumed reasons:
1. more time [due to - not seldomly - being unemployed]
2. lack of finances [appearance is either getting payed, or a chance to win, or rewards are given]
3. assuming that being on TV is an achievement [psychologically to explain with the lack of sense of belonging or lack of achievement due to restricted prospects regarding vertical rise in the society]
4. a different taste for publicity [i. e. different opinion towards exhibiting oneself]

to some degree reality TV reminds me of the roman gladiator games (just that the gladiators this time are acting on their free will): cheap entertainment of the masses, who spend their time (me included) watching actually senseless shows instead of turning to quality TV while the upper classes feels itself affirmed in their (mostly) negative opinion towards the lower class since a lot of scenes in reality TV aren't nice to watch and include quite some exhibitionism (in germany physical and emotional)

however, when it comes to the question if reality TV is real or fake: in germany it's a mixture. sometimes something real can become fake shown in an altered/different context: something which is done quite often. and since wide parts of the audience are unable o differ between real and fake (or just plainly believe what is in TV is real) a lot of former participants of reality shows in germany did suffer from abuses or were avoided by their neighbors etc.

p.s. about realness
arguments on reality shows might be real but the people who do appear are all casted
the producers need arguments and tension to push the viewing rate in order to sell the advertisement slots, so they put very different characters in very limited space.
in 'real' life i avoid the people i dislike, how real is it to force someone to 'cooperate' with someone he can't stand in a reality show?

Reality shows may be scaling new heights but at the end of the day what matters is what they are giving to the society...
Today, many reality shows are on air but tell me how many you can watch along with your family...
Today's kids are getting exposed to such shows and hence there is an increase in violence, breakups, etc.
But I'm not against all the shows. Some are really good like Sa Re Ga Ma among others. Kaun Banega Crorepati was one such diamond...

I think we cannot generalise all the reality shows. Some are educative and good. But one think we must admit some shows are targeting the emotionally weaker sections of the people which is more in India

I dnt blv in the reality of such reality shows. They r totally scripted & are simply fake. Though many achieve fame in such shows, but aftr sum tym they disappear in the lime lite.

MTV is a good show. It is a complete package of fights, humour, entertainment, stunts. In short a masaledaar show.

It's ridiculous i think - all these nobody's reaching fame and even celebrities start these boring shows about their lives. YAWN. At the height of interest, i think it will eventually become too boring for people to really enjoy it.
The ***** fighting ones like Rock of Love are losing their appeal. It just seems more and more set up. Why would a famous rocker need a show to get a girlfriend and of those girls, they are all the same...small, blonde and large boobs...but they throw in some unique ones so it looks like he chose all types of girls. They are cast to add appeal to the show and get money from it. I know someone that was cast in a show about something that wasn't even true to his life but he had to pretend it was. Most of them are actors, models and wannabe stars. talent shows I do think ARE talent shows.
