Subject: Proposal to create a new certificate in Entrepreneurship

The College of Business Curriculum Committee approved a certificate in Entrepreneurship at the October 14, 2013
meeting. (Minutes are attached. Subsequent email ballot explicitly approved creation of a new certificate, whereas
the October 14 meeting was conducted in the context of changes to existing programs.) The new certificate is
presented for APC approval as described below.

Background: The College of Business has an existing Entrepreneurship emphasis available within the Management
major, as well as a minor in Entrepreneurship. The course work in both programs has extensive prerequisites,
including all College of Business admission requirements. This effectively makes the major emphasis and the minor
inaccessible to many non-business majors.

The Entrepreneurship curriculum has recently undergone substantial revision, partially driven by a goal of providing
a certificate in Entrepreneurship that is accessible to non-business majors. As new business creation is a driver for
economic development, such a program helps to address the university’s goal of supporting economic development
in the region.

The core courses in the certificate are designed to be taken independently from the rest of the College of Business
core. A “capstone” course in the sequence (MGMT 471) is available to non-business majors by permission. This
course involves development of a business plan for a new business venture, and may not be appropriate for all
students pursuing the certificate. Alternate courses may be selected based on student interest, by securing a
prerequisite waiver from the appropriate department chair.

The requirements of the proposed Certificate in Entrepreneurship are as follows:

12 Semester Credits as follows
Required Courses (9 credits)
Mgmt 371 Introduction to Entrepreneurship, 3 crs.
Mgmt 373 New Venture Feasibility, 3 crs
Mgmt 374 New Venture Start-up and Growth, 3 crs
Electives (3 credits)
Electives may be selected from the courses listed in the Entrepreneurship major or minor, or other pre-approved business course. (MGMT
471 may be used as the certificate elective with instructor permission. Non-business majors should consult with the chair of the department
offering other elective courses for a prerequisite waiver.)
