Satellite based online education plays a vital role in giving sound

9 satelliteFbased implementation also may provide an interactive audio
and video classroom, the most technically advanced from of -istance /ducation.
9n interactive audio and video format, however, provides less flexibility in time
and location for studies.
0any courses broadcast via satellite are now complemented and enriched
by a webFbased component.
wever, -istance <earning satellite
implementations may be used strictly for accessing the online courses and
resources, especially in remote areas lacking broadband access. 0any -istance
<earning satellite providers also are delivering video courses to desktop
computers, instead of classroom and conference facilities, appears to be a
growing trend.
wever -istance <earning providers advise students that highF
bandwidth connectivity and appropriate computer e'uipment are necessary to
take courses via video streaming.
63
To be effective, the design of a -istance <earning instructional delivery
system addresses both technological and human issues. The delivery technology
must be reliable, available and easy to use. -istance learning e'uipment also
must be installed in a convenient and inviting location to ensure maximum
utilization of the -< System. CS9T 1Cery Small 9perture Terminal5 allows classes!
broadcast from a single central studio and to be simultaneously received at
multiple school locations. The students are able to see and hear their teacher
make a prepared electronic presentation and use a blackboard or whiteboard
when re'uired. The teachers and students can interact over a voice channel,
which gives a very similar feeling to an actual classroom. The /->S9T
programmed is planned to provide a sustainable distance education service in
7ndia using advanced space and groundFbased technology. The system is
primarily meant for school, college and higherFlevel education and will also
support nonFformal education.
7n the first phase, a pilot project using 7?S9TF#9 and 7?S9TF# 8uFband
transponders is under implementation in 0aharashtra, 8arnataka and 0adhya
"radesh. 7n 0aharashtra, the A.. Chavan State (pen >niversity, ?ashik, will
use it for distance education. 7n 8arnataka, it will be used by the State /ducation
-epartment. 7n 0adhya "radesh, the &ajiv .andhi Technical >niversity will use it
for teaching support.
7n the second phase, the exclusive satellite /->S9T, to be launched in

about =$$ to @$$ classrooms per beam. 7n addition to the three states under first
phase, two more states and one national institution will be covered in the second
phase. 7t is anticipated that more users will fund the ground receive network in
this phase and build it up to about =$$$ classrooms per beam.
60
7n the third phase, the /->S9T network will be made operational.
0anufacturers and service providers are expected to replicate the systems with
funding by the endFusers with technical and managerial support from -(S.
.round infrastructure to meet the educational re'uirements of the country will be
built in the operational phase. /->S9T will be able to support a total of @+ to #$

Satellite based online education plays a vital role in giving sound

9 satelliteFbased implementation also may provide an interactive audio

9n interactive audio and video format, however, provides less flexibility in time
and location for studies.
0any courses broadcast via satellite are now complemented and enriched
by a webFbased component.

implementations may be used strictly for accessing the online courses and
resources, especially in remote areas lacking broadband access. 0any -istance
<earning satellite providers also are delivering video courses to desktop
computers, instead of classroom and conference facilities, appears to be a
growing trend.

bandwidth connectivity and appropriate computer e'uipment are necessary to
take courses via video streaming.
63
To be effective, the design of a -istance <earning instructional delivery
system addresses both technological and human issues. The delivery technology
must be reliable, available and easy to use. -istance learning e'uipment also
must be installed in a convenient and inviting location to ensure maximum

which gives a very similar feeling to an actual classroom. The /->S9T
