European Master in Arts, Culture and International Management
Executive Summary
This is the Public Part of the Progress Report of the EMACIM (European Master in Arts, Culture and International Management) project. The purpose of the project is to design a European jointly organized master’ s degree program combining two separate fields of knowledge: 1) art and culture, and 2) business and management. There are seven partner universities in six countries in this project, reflecting the different fields, interests and backgrounds: Finland – cultural experience, management and tourism; Greece – culture, communication and new media; Belgium and Poland – international business and fine arts; France – human sciences and arts; Portugal – social and human sciences. A working network between the partner universities has been created. This master’ s degree program will provide students the opportunities to gain knowledge and education in international business and international management as well as arts, cultural experience and heritage – tourism being seen as a modern link between them. The background of the consortium representing six different European countries and different fields of education offer unique opportunities for students in international exchange. The EMACIM degree programme is also aimed at developing teaching methods and offering teaching staff intercultural knowledge and experience. The main visible results of the first period of the project include: defining learning objectives of the degree; proposal for the curriculum structure; proposal for curricular units; proposal for thematic specialization by the partner universities and a list of preparatory titles of the core studies. Guidelines for teaching tools and methods have also been defined. The work in the project continues according to the accepted work plan. The most current tasks are finalising the curriculum (including overall study program with envisaged ECTS as well as specified course content document and course schedule), defining course material, specifying the mobility plan and developing teaching tools and methods. As soon as the above-mentioned tasks have been carried out, the emphasis will shift on programme promotion and awareness raising. The EMACIM web site designing is in progress. Its general graphic concept was accepted during the partner meeting in Metz in March 2008.

European Master in Arts, Culture and International Management
1.
Project Objectives
The purpose of this project is to design a European jointly organized master’ s degree program European Master in Arts, Culture and International Management. This degree program will offer a creative solution to the problem of integration and mergence of two separate and traditionally remote fields of knowledge – in this case art and culture on one hand, and business and management on the other. Single oriented education is no more meeting the demands of the changing world and the targets of the EU as the knowledge based society. The degree is aimed towards the Lisbon strategy for the Union to become the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world capable of sustainable economic growth with more and better jobs and greater social cohesion. A starting point of this project is the idea that the development of the European knowledge society should not allow the maintenance of national, sectoral or social barriers, but rather overcome them. The project will result in a ready EMACIM degree programme with developed course curricula, contents, material and patterns of on-line and off-line teaching methods and tools. It will also encompass the assessment methods and the certification process. This master’ s degree program will provide graduates the opportunities to gain knowledge and education in international business and management as well as arts, cultural experience and heritage – tourism being seen as a modern link between them. The new curriculum will increase the competitiveness and employability of all students taking part in the program and promote the entrepreneurial spirit among the arts and culture graduates. Enrolled students will take different parts of their degree in respective faculties/universities depending on the selected major and other subjects. The EMACIM degree programme will also offer students of the partner countries opportunities to meet, establish networks and learn by experiencing different cultures during the study program. The EMACIM degree program is also aimed at developing teaching methods allowing teachers and trainers to be up-to-date and able to provide the newest knowledge and use of modern and successful teaching methods, materials and tools. Updating of skills throughout the lifetime of individuals and acquiring diverse education in the first place will be a key element in the fight against social exclusion and in the promotion of equal opportunities. This project will contribute to the sound basis of these aims. This project will also address the issues of the development of society by application of innovative pedagogical approaches, increasing expert skills, reducing disparities and inequities among individuals and groups and promoting dynamics based on cultural diversity within Europe. The seven consortium partners include diverse range of the EU.

2.
Project Approach
There are seven partner universities in six countries (Belgium, Finland, France, Greece, Poland and Portugal) in this project. Each partner is responsible for at least one of the nine work packages of the project, but the importance of cooperation between the work packages and partners is evident. The work in the project consists of 1) co-operation and working together: partner meetings, work meetings and “ virtual” communication between the meetings 2) specialised work in the partner universities. The design of the master’ s degree curriculum, course contents, material and teaching methods are carried out by the trainers and teachers in the partner universities and discussed and monitored together in partner and work meetings. The project has collected information through round table meetings in the partner countries. The aim of the round tables was to organize a discussion between cultural managers and cultural professionals on the one hand and academics on the other. The main question of these meetings was: what are the skills that cultural organizations and companies (the cultural industry) expect from cultural managers or entrepreneurs involved in international business? The round tables proved to be very useful tools in clarifying the needs of this kind of program. A different pattern of a series of interviews was applied in Athens; also it worked well. The evaluation process of the project is going on throughout the project life cycle, including the following parts and phases: management and quality assuarance; setting up and working of the extended evaluation group (2-3 members from each partner specialized in different modules of the curriculum); feedback from the industries (business, culture); designing the feedback and testing procedure (students and teaching staff). The dissemination of the reached project results will be done through the project website and the partner organisations’ websites; other promotion material (brochures, leaflets, posters, etc); mailing information to art and business faculties and industries in Europe; organising advertising campaign and through press. The project will end up in the implementation plan of the curriculum in the partner universities, including practical issues (organising the selection of the applications in the partner countries; organisation of the exchange of the students and staff; recruiting the external expertise needed, etc.)

Project Outcomes & Results
A working network between the partner universities has been created and three partner meetings (with all partners) have been organised. Round tables organized and expert interviews made have contributed essential improvement in the understanding of the needs and possibilities of this kind of a new master program. The main visible results of the first period of the project include: defining learning objectives; proposal for the curriculum structure; proposal for curricular units; proposal for thematic specialization by the partner universities and a list of preparatory titles of the core studies. Guidelines for teaching tools and methods have also been defined. EMACIM web site designing is in progress. The general graphic concept was accepted during working meeting in Metz in March 2008. It is gradually being updated, taking into consideration the partners’ suggestions during partner meetings.

Partnerships
The setup of the consortium reflects the different fields, interests and backgrounds to fulfil the diversity of the MA program: Finland (University of Lapland): cultural experience, management and tourism Greece (University of Athens): culture, communication and new media Belgium (Groupe ICHEC-ISC St Louis - ISFSC) and Poland (Karol Adamiecki University & Academy of Fine Arts Katowice): international business and fine arts France (University of Metz): human sciences and arts Portugal (Univesidade Nova de Lisbon): social and human sciences. Cohesion and integration are important aims of the EU, and this project will facilitate progress towards them in several ways. The partners themselves represent different European cultures and educational systems in quite a balanced way; this offers a good basis for building an intercultural and rich program based on a wide European background and offering plenty of opportunities for valuable comparisons and European synthesis. The program as such ties the partners together in a joint venture which is aimed to produce new good European practices of university teaching and learning; the fruits of this exercise will provide good examples of cohesion and integration within the higher education that is a most central tool in building the European knowledge society. The background of the consortium representing six different European countries and different fields of education offer unique opportunities for students in international exchange. Separate degree modules will be developed in each participant country. Each university will offer a specific field of study for the whole program. Forthcoming students will be able to select the most appropriate modules to their developed study plan from different countries. So, the EMACIM degree programme will offer the opportunity for international students from the partner countries to meet, establish networks, and learn by experiencing different cultures during the study program. The international network of partners will provide an intercultural environment and multi-discipline experience where variety of cultures and applied practices will enrich the contents of curriculum and provide an exceptionally good basis for useful comparisons. Interculturalism and diversity of languages will be one of the basic principles of the programme. Not only students, but also staff members will benefit from the enrichment this program offers – both at the home university and while teaching abroad.

Contribution to EU policies
Increased cohesion within member countries is one of the key EU aims. The EMACIM program contributes clearly towards this aim. Lisbon Education & Training Progress Indicators Inward and outward mobility of teachers and trainers within LLL Programmes This project supports the mobility of teachers and trainers. It is aimed toward increasing the opportunities of teachers and trainers to have exchange and to enhance their know how and knowledge about other European countries. Inward and outward mobility of Erasmus students The project is targeted towards increasing the mobility of the students. It will be a requirement of the degree that one or two subjects will have to be taken in other than home country. Lisbon Key Competences Communication in the mother tongue This project promotes communication competences both orally and in writing in a variety of communicative situations. It includes possibilities to analyse and distinguish different types of texts; to search for, collect and process information, and to formulate and express one's oral and written arguments in a convincing way appropriate to the context. Communication in the foreign languages Communication in foreign languages is essential in this program. The program will promote cultural and linguistic diversity based on the type of the different study modules. Entrepreneurship The EMACIM program offers a unique opportunity to promote European entrepreneurship combining studies of arts and business with targeted mobility during the Master program. Cultural expression Cultural knowledge includes an awareness of local, national and international cultural heritage and their place in the world. It covers a basic knowledge of major cultural works. It is essential to understand the cultural and linguistic diversity in Europe and other regions of the world, the need to preserve it and the importance of aesthetic factors in daily life. These are important aspects also in modern consumption, and therefore, in modern studies of business. The EMACIM program pays much attention to this.

Implementing the New Program: Testing Needed
This project has already revealed a clear neede for clarification in European practices for execution of this kind of programs. This concerns for example: fees for the students of the testing period status of the degree financing of the continuous functioning of the program. Therefore, it seems appropriate to start with a testing round of the new program. The academic years 2009-2010 are proposed as the testing period.
