IELTS is specified as fulfilling English language requirements for entry into academic courses by the majority of institutions of further and higher education in the United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa and a growing number of universities and colleges in the USA and Canada. It is also used by a number of professional bodies world-wide, including the General Medical Council in the UK, the Australian Medical Council, and the Nursing Council of New Zealand. An increasing number of government departments are utilising IELTS, including the Ministry of Defence in the UK, the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs in Australia and the New Zealand Immigration Service. An up-to-date list of institutions which specify IELTS scores as fulfilling their English language requirements is available on the IELTS website IELTS: International English Language Testing System
