Prof Dr. Uday Salunkhe Expresses His Expectations from the Union budget 2017-18

Budget 2017, which is now going to be presented this year on 1st February, instead of end of February, is already riding high on expectations. The path breaking moves like demonetization, setting a panel of experts to draft New Education Policy and the creation of Higher Education Funding Agency (HEFA) have all been welcome moves in the direction of creating a better India. In such a backdrop, it is obvious that the expectations of people from the budget will be high. Here are Prof Dr Uday Salunkhe’s views on the expectations from the Union Budget 2017-18.

"The education sector plays a pivotal role in the economic and social development of India, the Government should provide a boost to the education and skill development initiatives. It is also very important to take measures to encourage academic research and involve participation of private institutions to advance the sector. We also hope that the Government also undertakes curriculum reforms that can help improve and enhance the learning outcomes.

We welcome the Government’s thrust on the Skill India initiative and the intent to make India the workforce supplier of the world. A step in this direction would be providing micro-finance facilities and easy availability of loans to students, especially to those showing a good academic track record. Also, lowering the interest rates for education loans will immensely help to make this initiative more inclusive."

Prof. Dr. Uday Salunkhe's Expectations from Union Budget 2017-18 for Education

With the Union Budget 2017-18 presented earlier than usual, on February 1st, 2017, and against the backdrop of significant initiatives like demonetization (which occurred in November 2016), the New Education Policy discussions, and the creation of the Higher Education Funding Agency (HEFA - established in May 2017, conceived in Budget 2016-17), expectations from the government were notably high. Prof. Dr. Uday Salunkhe, an eminent figure in the education sector, outlined his key expectations, primarily focusing on boosting education and skill development.

Prof. Salunkhe emphasized the pivotal role of the education sector in India's socio-economic progress. He urged the government to significantly boost education and skill development initiatives. A critical aspect he highlighted was the need for measures to encourage academic research and foster greater participation of private institutions to advance the sector as a whole. Furthermore, he expressed hope for curriculum reforms aimed at improving and enhancing learning outcomes across educational institutions.

Welcoming the government's focus on the Skill India initiative and its ambition to position India as a global workforce supplier, Prof. Salunkhe suggested concrete steps to support this vision. He advocated for the provision of micro-finance facilities and easy availability of loans to students, particularly those with strong academic records. Crucially, he also called for lowering interest rates on education loans to make skill development and higher education more inclusive and accessible to a wider segment of the population.
