Preparation for CAT 2015 Exam

XAT 2015 Preparation
XAT 2015 will be conducted in 47 cities across India and 2 International cities outside India
In XAT exams, unlike other MBA entrance tests, candidates need to be more attentive in selecting which question to solve and what to drop without wasting much time. This is an important aspect of XAT examination as it throws more number of questions to be solved in less time. In such a pressure building scenario, students need not lose their nerve and solve easier looking questions before attempting tough or complicated questions.
Practice Essay Writing – XAT is one of the few MBA entrance exams which are held in both objective and subjective patterns. Practice will raise your confident. You will be given a topic and 20 minutes duration on which you have to write an essay. If you think that you would crack the Essay Writing part with impromptu attempt, you are wrong. Prepare for the essay writing section with reading newspapers regularly and following the current trends and practice writing within time limit. Practicing essays are crucial to doing well in the essay section, for writing a coherent, crisp 200-word essay in 20-30 minutes is by no means a cakewalk.
Essay 2014 Topic
"The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched-they must be felt with the heart." -Helen Keller”
Essay 2013 Topic
'Corruption is the root cause of economic slowdown in India.'
Choose the areas to prepare wisely – Going by the past years’ analysis, the XAT syllabus covers diverse range of topics. You will have to select the topics wisely based on the weights given in the exam as well as your strengths and weaknesses. Quantitative Ability section, traditionally, the XAT has tested candidates on Higher Math topics such as Calculus, Functions etc. However, the emphasis on this has reduced over the years and the XAT is also becoming a more logical test like the CAT. However, the level of difficulty of questions on Geometry and Number Theory is higher than that in the CAT. Candidates should focus on their weaknesses during mock tests and practice sessions, this would help scoring better on the final day. Data Interpretation questions in the XAT are more data intensive than in the CAT. Each Data Interpretation set in the XAT contains more data in the form of tables/graphs than in the CAT.
Quantitative Ability – Practice is the one and only way to crack this section. If Quant is among your strong areas, all you need to do is to practice. If it is your weak point, you need to first clear your basics and select few important topics which you are confident about and go ahead with them. For the Quantitative Ability, all I can say is that you need to practice a lot. This section can be mastered easily if you have practiced many questions on different sections.
English Language & Logical Reasoning – Reading and practicing is the key to success for this section. XAT gives high weight on the vocabulary areas and the Reading Comprehension questions are mostly inference based. Hence, focus on improving your vocabulary skills by reading books like Word Power by Norman Lewis, Barron’s Dictionary to name a few. For RCs, reading different types of pieces, fiction or non-fiction, news or article followed by analytical introspection. For fine tuning the Verbal Ability area, reading standard blogs and sites is one of the key strategies. Following one business daily and one national daily helps.
Decision Making – Decision Making is a section which is unique to XAT. Like other sections, practicing past years question papers and mock tests will help you obtain a grip over the area. Candidates should be well-versed with decision making. The main trick to solve the questions in this section is to have good reading speed. The Decision Making questions require a logical approach and a clear understanding of the situation. It often requires going through large amounts of text and then logically interpreting the information presented. To put it in conventional terms, it is a combination of Reading Comprehension and Logical Reasoning and traditionally students who are good in these two areas tend to do well in the Decision Making section as well.
General Knowledge – In XAT the topics from which the General Knowledge questions appear include Business, Sports, Economy, Politics, Trade and International Bodies. General Awareness is a very vast area, it makes sense to follow the top stories as and when they happen. Candidates should stay updated with current affairs, national and international news, there is no better way to prepare other than staying updated regularly and should start enhancing their general awareness full-time by reading newspapers and magazines such as Outlook and Outlook Business. While reading up on news making events, candidates should consider various aspects and arguments and use their own judgement to decide what their stand should be.
Essay – For the Essay section, you will be given a separate paper and 20 minutes duration. Your essay should be of 200 to 300 words. Your essay will be evaluated on the basis of language skills, thought process etc. The writing should always be target oriented, candidates should always remember that their articles would be analysed by the XAT examiner. Having a fair knowledge of the contemporary topics will give you an edge. So reading newspapers, especially the editorial columns, is highly advised. Objective part has more weightage. But Essay writing will play an important role in XAT 2015. Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) is designed to assess multidimensional capability of aspirants in XAT 2015. Candidates should first build an outline before beginning to write the essay. This gives a proper foundation to the essay which in other ways would lead to a disorganized piece of writing.
