Packaging reduction, reuse and recycling

DHL’s packaging program strives to reduce the company's contribution to the solid waste stream and increase energy savings.

• DHL selects suppliers of quality packaging who actively participate in environmentally safe methods. We annually visit manufacturing locations where packaging items are produced, examining all phases of the vendors' operations including their recycling practices. DHL reviews the ability to control waste and scrap, the handling of wastewater, air emissions and recycling records. Vendors are encouraged to monitor sub-contractors' recycling practices and give advice where warranted.

• By eliminating "inner" cartons and reducing the size of master-cartons, DHL significantly reduces corrugated cardboard consumption. This improves shipping efficiencies, resulting in fewer truck deliveries, thereby reducing oil and gas consumption

• DHL has partnered with The 100% Recycled Paperboard Alliance, a non-profit group responsible for promoting 100% recycled paperboard packaging. Our Letter Express® Envelopes and Flight-ReadySM Letter Express Envelopes contain the following recycled content:

1. Post-Consumer: 96% to 98%

2. Post-Industrial: 2% to 4%

3. Total Recycled Content: 100%
