Planned organizational change occurs when there is failure of people to make the business continuously adaptable. Thus, organizational change is a by-product of some kind of failure. Czarniawska & Joerges says "first there were losses, then there was a plan of change, and then there was an implementation, which led to unexpected results" (1996:20).

Ford & Ford characterized change as "a phenomenon of time. It is the way people talk about the event in which something appears to become, or turn into, something else, where the 'something else' is seen as a result or outcome."

Huber et al think that in organizations, change includes differences "in how an organization functions, who its members and leaders are, what form it takes, or how it allocates its resources

Project and Team Coordination: The matrix structure uses a dynamic and capable project team which is enabled for viewing problems in a specialized manner since experts are available to handle tasks in a new environment. Project managers are responsible to complete a project within a particular budget and deadline. Companies have realized that along with geography, technology, product and customer grouping are important as well. The matrix structure, instead of choosing an organizing principle to reflect the strands of the business, manages them through addressing the groups and functions individually.

Matrix Structure Offers Priority and Balance: The clarity of the structure allows flexibility to your business. Although the structure in itself works to solve nothing, it is adopted to enhance the way people in an organization work together. It allows better coordination especially on shared technologies across the organization as well as the ability to make centralized and quick decisions.
