The matrix structure in an organization refers to a type of organizational management where people having a similar set of skills are pooled in together for work. This means that all the engineers are appointed at a single engineering department and report to an engineering manager. However, they are assigned to handle different projects, after the completion of which, they report to a manager. This means each engineer may be required to work under different managers to accomplish their tasks.
Key Concepts
The idea of the matrix management structure is to introduce and recognize the practical complexities of the current business environment and address it accordingly. The structure introduces a high level of internal complexity and even challenges of man management. However, there are inherent advantages of the system too.
Accessibility to Resources: Matrix management helps in choosing individuals and resources according to the needs of the project. The structure successfully tackles organizational strategies by allocating resources to specific tasks to handle external and internal complexity. There is an improved ability to enter resources through geographic and functional boundaries. With a broader development technology, the matrix management structure brings workers with multiple skills to the fore and encourages better coordination and communication across the business.
An organization structure is the way inwhich the tasks and subtasks required to implement a strategy are arranged. The diagrammatical representation of structure could be an organization chart but a chart shows only the 'skeleton'. The 'flesh and blood' that brings to life an organization is the several mechanisms that support the structure. All these cannot be depicted on a chart. But a strategist has to grapple with the complexities of creating the structure, making it work, redesigning when required, and implementing changes that will keep the structure relevant to the needs of the strategies that have to be implemented. Successful strategy formulation does not guarantee successful strategy implementation. Varies among different types & sizes of organizations Organization Structure Organizational structure & the controls that are a part of it affect firm's performance.
