The Orchid in its endeavour to become a "zero garbage" hotel has taken various measures to reduce the waste being generated. To reinforce this we have undertaken the project of vermiculture on hotel site.

For this purpose we have built 9 bins on site wherein all the kitchen garbage is diverted for the process. This endeavour of ours has helped us to achieve our "zero garbage" mission; the second benefit of this act is that we are not adding to the waste stream of our city. Orchid is the first 5 Star hotel in Mumbai to undertake vermiculture.

Average food waste generated by the Orchid: 350 Kgs / day

Classified Into:

Item Kgs

Cooked Food 180

Bones 60

Fruit Waste 40

Green & Vegetables 60

Bakery Products 30

Vermiculture Project was started in January 2000

• Started with 2 Bins which treats Approximately 40 - 50 Kgs waste per Day.

• Bins are 4 Ft in Dia & 5 Ft in height with 2 Dia holes on the sides for ventilation.

The Vermi Compost Pit at The Orchid contains 7 Layers

• 3" Layer of Pebbles

• 3" Layer of Prewashed Coarse River Sand

These Layers are provided to keep the Earthworms Cool.

• 3" of Soil Mixed with Cowdung - Acting as an antiseptic and helps to repel rats and other insects

• 6" of Sugarcane baggase ( immersed overnight in water and sun dried to remove all traces of juices ). The baggase absorbs and retains moisture helping to keep the earthworm cool.

• 3" Layer of processed vermiculture soil ( excreta of earthworms ) Mixed with vermicasting ( small eggs of earthworms in the soil which will germinate after 3 months )

• One more layer of Baggase - 3"

A Final layer of processed Vermi - Compost soil with 5000 productive Earthworms.

Place waste on top surface daily covering with leaves and churn once a week.
Compost will be ready in 3 Months.

Shredder Cum Compactor Machine

To speed up the process of vermiculture we will have a shredder cum compactor machine

• Reduce the volume / weight of kitchen waste atleast by 50%

• Resulting in lesser space required otherwise

• Much less duration - Compost ready in 1 - 11½ Months

Above picture shows the Kitchen at The Orchid which seprates the waste into non-metal, metal , wet and dry waste.

The above picture shows 2 more Worm Pits. The Orchid has 7 such vermiculture pits which helps the hotel to recycle its waste.
