Registrations for postgraduate courses at the School of Open learning (SOL), Delhi University (DU), will be open from September 18-28, 2007, and for the first time, SOL will be conducting an entrance examination for its MA programme in Sanskrit. The open school conducts postgraduate programmes in five subjects — Hindi, Sanskrit, history, commerce and political science.
According to H C Pokhariyal, executive director, SOL, "We do not intend to admit students who are unable to meet the minimum eligibility requirements. Admission standards have been set for students from within or outside the university, and these must be maintained. Sanskrit, as a subject, is usually taken for granted, and the entrance test has been introduced to address the same."
Until the previous session, students were admitted to the Sanskrit course without such an exam, and were required to score a minimum of 55% during graduation.
Explains Pokhariyal, "This year on, appearing for the entrance test will be mandatory for all outstation students and also those of DU's internal graduates who have secured an aggregate of less than 55%."
SOL has approximately 1,500 seats across all postgraduate courses, and Pokhariyal says that there are no chances of an increase in this number.
The last dates for registration for the various courses are as follows: September 18 for MCom, September 21 for MA Sanskrit, September 24 for MA History and MA Hindi, and September 28 for MA Political Science.
The entrance dates for MCom, MA Sanskrit, MA History, MA Hindi and MA Political Science are September 23, 25, 27, 29 and October 1, respectively.
