National School of Drama is one of the primary theatre training academic bodies in the globe. It is an independent institution functioning under the Ministry of Culture, GoI. The National Institute of Drama offers a three years diploma program, Post Graduate Diploma in Dramatic Arts, for the talented candidates with artistic favor. The aim of such program is to develop the theatrical skills in the talents including the practical and theoretical knowledge in the artistic area. It also helps the candidates to develop the creative imagination and expression which one of the core concept in theatre performance. NSD offer different specialization in PGDDA including the direction, stagecraft and acting. The NSD is the only place for theatre training in India and the number of seats available of the program is limited to 20-30. Hence getting admission into the school is a difficult task for the candidates. The NSD conducts a national level screening test for the applicants as part of their admission process and only the qualified candidates of these audition test can make their admission into the prominent Institute. The School provides scholarship for the selected candidates for the PGDDA program.
Structure of NSD Screening Test
The Screening test has two phases,
Phase I
This is the audition round or the practical tests were the candidates are evaluated by their natural talents and artistic interest. The candidates should perform in front of the selection panel on the given or chosen art form. The audition/practical test is conducted on the five different centers of NSD in the five different states.
Stage II
The successful candidates of the first phase will call for the second stage of the selection process, which held at the New Delhi campus. In the second stage they have to attend the 3-5 days workshops. During the workshop they will give the specific tasks to perform and the final selection of the candidates will based on the performance and score of the candidates during the workshop. The candidates at this stage are evaluated based on their attitude, initiation and participation in the collective tasks.
Eligibility Criteria
The candidates must have a graduation from any discipline from the recognized institute or University. The candidates should have a background of participating in at least 6 plays or in any production or theatre works. They must have a good proficiency in the languages English and Hindi. The candidate’s age should be between 18 and 30. The reservation category will have the consideration as per the Government rules.
How to Apply?
The candidates should apply for the screening test in the prescribed form. Every year on the month of February the detailed notification for the exam is available in the leading newspapers. The candidates can send a request for screening test form to the given address. They must enclose the crossed DD from the nationalized Bank in favor of “The Director, NSD”. The cost of NSD screening test form is Rs.150/-.
How to fill the Form?
The detailed information regarding how to fill the form is given in the information brochure. The candidates should understand the instruction given in the booklet and follow the guidelines without any change. You can use a black pen for providing data on the form and avoid mistakes and overwriting. The form should be readable to any and it should be neat. The mistakes done by candidates or any damage to the form will lead to the rejection of the application and the candidate won’t be able to appear for the screening test. After filling the application recheck the given information are valid. The filled form should send along with the copy of the suggested certification, testimonial certification and proof for the eligibility. You have to make sure that the form will reach the admission centre of NSD before the deadline.
