There is some good news for the Coffee drinkers as a prominent scientist has claimed it to be a wonderful health drink which helps in the prevention of cancer.
Caffeine in coffee reduces the ill-effects of radiation and heat and inhibits cancer by the absorption of anti-oxidants, P C Kesavan, former director of Bio-Medical Group at the Baba Atomic Research Centre, said.
He was addressing a function to commemorate 20 years of the cardiac care institute at Madras Medical Mission.
Kesavan, who was working as a research scientist for the last ten years in M S Swaminathan Research Foundation, said the foundation was working on producing paddy seeds which would grow in saline water.
Since, global warming would lead to rise of sea level and salination of coastal lands, paddy growing in saline conditions was necessary, he said adding the new paddy variety was being produced by gene transfer of a marsh plant into paddy seed.
The green revolution had resulted in affecting soil health and environmental hazards due to the "greed" of people who wanted more profits, he said adding, his foundation was now working for an `ever-green revolution' using environmental friendly methods.
If the country was not self-reliant in food, it could not have had the independence to go for nuclear programmes, he added.
