Sister Nirmala joshi, who succeeded Mother Teresa as the head of the missionaries of Charity, died at 81. She has the beautiful soul and the shadow of Mother Teresa embedded in her. She had only one vision that glitters in her eyes is to help others and spread the message of humanity. She even ignored the title of mother so as to respect Mother Teresa and continued as a head of missionaries of Charity till 2009. She was awarded with Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second largest civilian award, in 2009.

Talking to the Indian Express, the Archbishop said that Sister Nirmala was suffering from some heart ailment and staying at a Missionaries of Charity home near St John’s Church, Sealdah. She was admitted to hospital some time back but again brought back to the MoC home, said the Archbishop.

"Sister Nirmala's life was devoted to service, caring for the poor & underprivileged. Saddened by her demise. May her soul rest in peace," PM Modi posted. A Missionaries of Charity official said Sister Nirmala was not keeping well for the past few days and her health was gradually deteriorating.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted: "Extremely saddened at the passing away of Sister Nirmala. She carried forward Mother Teresa's work with quiet dedication &dignity. She will be missed by the countless whose lives she touched."

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was one of the first to tweet the sad news. She posted, “Saddened at the passing away of Sister Nirmala who headed the Missionaries of Charity after Mother Teresa. Kolkata and the world will miss her.”

The funeral of Sister Nirmala would be held at the Mother House on AJC Bose Road, said the Archbishop and she will be buried at the St John’s cemetery where many of the eminent nuns are resting, said Thomas D’Souza.
