The benchmark indices witnessed spectacular rally as the Sensex surged 539 points to close at 17,231 after hitting a high of 17,252. While the Nifty gained 158 points or 3.1% to settle at 5,144 after making a high of 5,149. Buying was seen across the board, metal, oil & gas, power, technology, capital goods and banking were the prominent gainers. The breadth was quite strong and the markets reported one of the highest turnover in recent months, at 1,36,992 cr. The Dec nifty future ended with 13 points premium and Jan’10 nifty future ended with 18 points premium.
