Huge institution buying in banking & financial stocks and positive global cues helped the Sensex to gain 340 points to close at 16,498 after swinging in the range of 16,147 – 16,517. The Nifty rose 102 points or 2.13% to settle at 4,898 after seeing a day's high of 4,905. All sectoral indices ended in the green. Among the broader indices - the BSE Midcap Index rose 1.97% and Smallcap Index was up 2.16%. Banking was the biggest gainer among the sectoral indices. The market breadth remained positive throughout the session and the total turnover stood at Rs 94,517 cr.
