Nigeria UNI:Pan-African University - Lagos Business School

Brief History of Lagos Business School
The Lagos Business School (LBS) was founded in 1991 as a management development organization offering non-degree professional development programmes to practicing managers. In January 2002 the Federal Government of Nigeria approved the application of LBS to be raised to the status of a private university as part of Pan-African University .

From that moment the Lagos Business School became the first school of Pan-African University and became able to run degree programmes in Business Administration. LBS started its Part-time (Executive) MBA in 2002, the Full-time MBA in June 2003 and a Doctorate Degree programme in Management in October 2006.
LBS Mission
LBS is a community of people committed to creating and transmitting management and business knowledge based on a Christian conception of man and economic activity and relevant to the Nigerian environment. We strive to be a world-class business school which will have a significant impact on the practice of management.

In order to achieve this mission the School seeks to:
• Provide high potential professionals with a general management education which stresses professional ethics and service to the community through the practice of management.
• Have a positive impact on the professional and ethical standards of business management in Nigeria
• Make intellectual contributions which a) support the practice of management; b) contribute to the advancement of the management disciplines; and c) create high quality teaching materials.

From the Vice Chancellor

If you are willing to engage in a challenging programme that will take you to the heights of professional competence and open the door to a successful career in business, the MBA at LBS is the programme you want.
Our full-time MBA programme has been designed to meet international standards while being directly relevant to our economic environment. It emphasizes the human, ethical and social dimensions of management so that graduates may have a broad vision of life and be outstanding for their integrity and professional competence.
If you are determined to make a difference in the world of business and in the development of our society, we would like to hear from you.
Programme Overview

The Lagos Business School, Pan-African MBA programme is intended to provide a solid foundation in general management, and will be specially suited for the young professional who aspires to a career in management. Emphasis will be given to the knowledge of management science, the development of management skills and the acquisition of a capacity for sound decision-making.

The programme consists of three basic elements:
• A rigorous and highly structured first year with emphasis on the functional areas of management. All courses in the first year will be compulsory or required.
• A more diversified second year with core courses and electives
• An internship to be done during the three-month break between the first and second years.
• The programme runs full-time for 21months, divided into 2 sessions (or years) of 3 terms each. A term is 11 weeks of lectures, and is followed by a 2-week break before the next term begins.
From the MBA Director

Are you considering an MBA? Are you searching for a programme that combines local knowledge with global outlook? The MBA programme of the Lagos Business School (LBS), Pan African University will equip you with the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to jump start a career in management.
The main pedagogical tool used at LBS is the case study method which brings a slice of reality into the classroom. Through several cases dynamically discussed with your classmates, each with diverse backgrounds, you will be exposed to various management situations in different business functions, industries and geographical markets. Furthermore, the MBA programme incorporates group work which goes a long way in boosting teambuilding and interpersonal skills, a major requirement in today’s business world.
As government regulations, environmental sustainability, globalisation and other social factors take a larger role in shaping businesses and industries, the school’s Christian vision of man, business and society means that business ethics is not taught as a stand alone course but cuts across every course. Therefore you are prepared to be a competent and socially responsible manager in the 21st century. Besides, an MBA from the Pan-African University is an immense asset whether you plan to run your own business or engage in corporate employment.

Re: Nigeria UNI:THE MBA Experience

THE MBA Experience
Seun Afuwape
MBA-3
International Graduate Associate, Standard Chartered Bank.
Coming to a programme such as this where people come from different cultural and educational backgrounds, and having to learn from each person’s perspective was quite rewarding. As a pharmacist learning in a class with an economist or an accountant was quite challenging, because we were looking at issues from very different angles, and yet I was able to learn how to accommodate people and understand their perspectives, so that I could appreciate them better.

Dayo Adegun
MBA-3
Corporate Financial Analyst, Orwell International oil & Gas
What I find most rewarding after the MBA programme:
Changing my career and what I do daily has been quite rewarding. I previously worked as an accountant for about 3 years which I found very boring, but now I’m a financial analyst doing new things. I work in the business development department, and that keeps me thinking on my feet. I also feel I can perform any task in any organization, I just need very little time to get the hang of things and then I’m set.

MBA Admission Requirements

To be considered for admission into the MBA class, you have to meet the following requirements which will be evaluated at different stages of the admission process:
• Minimum of a second-class lower university degree in any discipline OR a Post-Graduate Diploma from a university
• At least 5 credit passes including Mathematics and English at O’ Level
• Good GMAT score OR good score at our entrance exam

Re: Nigeria UNI:Philosophical Foundations of the programme

Philosophical Foundations of the programme

LBS welcomes and encourages a wide pluralism of views and methods among its lecturers. But in order to carry out its mission LBS also wants to ensure a basic coherence among all the aspects of the teaching imparted in the School.
At LBS the fundamental unifying factor is provided by the Christian vision of man, society and economic activity, a view that can be shared by all people who, independently of their religious beliefs, recognise a spiritual dimension in human beings.
The following are the basic principles which inform the teaching imparted in the MBA programme:
• Human beings are moral beings whose behaviour is not mechanically determined by either internal or external factors and who cannot attain fulfillment if they restrict their activity to the pursuit of their own individual interests.
• The purpose of business organisations is not restricted to producing profits for their owners nor can the objective of maximising profit be the supreme standard of decision. Business organisations are members of larger societies and must contribute to their common good. The activities of business organisations must also be compatible with - and contribute to - the full human development of those who work in them.
• Business organisations are not mere production units. First and foremost they must be human communities where all have an opportunity to participate and contribute responsibly to the common good of the organisation and that of society.
• Business organisations are not justified in creating and marketing products or services by the mere fact that a demand for them exists or can be created. The value of the organisation's activity ultimately depends on its serving authentic human needs and values.
• Business organisations must respect the dignity of all the human persons (employees, customers, suppliers...) with whom they relate in the exercise of their activity. A person's dignity is not respected when one chooses to harm him or her, even if this is done as a means to attain some desirable objective. When harm to a person results as a collateral effect of an action which pursues other objectives, the dignity of the person harmed is not respected if that action has been performed without a serious, proportionate reason.

Visiting professors and other guest lecturers

During the programme, the slice of reality that the case study method brings to each session is complemented with visiting professors leading/facilitating a course or by inviting industry practitioners as guest lecturers to further enrich the global and local perspective of the students respectively.
Such opportunities will broaden your perspective particularly when the guest lecturer is a protagonist in a case that has been discussed. Similarly, visiting professors from IESE Business School, our partner school, bring to the class diverse approaches to problem solving unique to their cultural environment and particular to their research interests
