After having taken a sizeable share of the existing courier business, TNT is now also diversifying into new and related areas like logistics management. Says Mr Sancheti of TNT, "By year 2007, contribution from logistics and express will be evenly divided with the mail business remaining at around 5 per cent."


With an aviation infrastructure of 3 aircrafts, Blue Dart today believes that it is well poised to cater to the increasing demand in specialised services in the domestic market. The company also plans to take its brand outside India and become a regional player.



Towards this it has already deployed agents in Bhutan, Nepal and Bangladesh and exploring opportunities in Sri Lanka and Maldives. But having secured a big step in its domestic turf, it is the profitable international business that remains an area of concern, albeit its tie-up with DHL. In its tie-up DHL, Blue Dart's services wil be limited to outbound pickup, which analysts argue is less remunerative than customs clearance and inbound delivery. Margins which are already under pressure for the company: net margins fell from 9 per cent in 2000-01 to 6.2 per cent in 2001-02.
