Airports Authority of India Ltd (AAI) is expected to call for international competitive bids for the new Chennai airport soon. The state government has already identified 4,820 acres of land in the outskirts of Chennai for the greenfield project.

Projects Ltd is keen to bag the Chennai airport project once the AAI invites bids.
The company, if emerged winner, would develop the airport through special purpose vehicle, which is a 50:50 joint venture between Australia’s Macquarie.
Sources close to GMR said that the group will bid for the project once the tendering process started. “As a norm, GMR will bid for any new greenfield airport project coming up in the country.
GMR will indeed bid for the Chennai project. But the company is not interested in the modernisation project at the existing airport in Chennai”, sources said. However, the company has not yet finalised its strategy for the Chennai project, sources added.
In May this year, the state Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has announced the setting up of a greenfield airport in the outskirts of Chennai to ease the congestion at the existing airport. According to sources, a few more companies are also waiting in the wings to bid for the project. The greenfield airport project is slated to come up in 4,820.66 acres of land at an estimated cost of Rs 2,000 crore. Airports Authority of India is the nodal agency implementing the project. The state government has already kicked off the process for land acquisition for the project.
