Bollywood Appeal for another N7W nominee

Top Indian Film Star, VijayKanth, has cast his vote for his favourite New 7 Wonder.
The well-known Bollywood star, who has acted in more than 100 movies, and whose face is known worldwide, is a native of Tamil Nadu, home to the Meenakshi Temple.
He drew an audience of thousands when he publically cast his vote for the temple in Madurai, southern India.
Its promoters have been determined not to be outdone by the celebrity appearance of the Indian Film Actress Aishwarya Rai at the Taj Mahal last December. Her visit generated more than a quarter of a million votes for the Taj Mahal in the week that followed, and prompted the nominations of 20 more Indian treasures.
The Taj Mahal and the Meenakshi Temple have been vying for 1st place in the N7W Top 7 of the Week ever since.
V.N. Senthilkannan, one of the leading campaigners for the Meenakshi Temple, has pledged to do everything he can to see his monument among the final 7 on January 1 2007.
"We hope to welcome Mr Weber to our town, and our temple, soon, so he can see for himself just why it is so special, and why we believe it is more of a wonder than even the Taj Mahal," said Senthilkannan.

A film initiated by New 7 Wonders founder, Bernhard Weber, has gone on global release. "The Giant Buddhas", directed by Oscar-nominated Christian Frei, documents the destruction of two giant Buddha statues in the remote area of Bamiyantal in Afghanistan, which were blown up as part of a Taliban bid to destroy all non-Islamic statues.

It was inspired by Weber, who amid widespread international outrage at the destruction of the 1500-year-old statues, launched a project to rebuild the larger one. At 55 meters tall, this was the largest depiction of Buddha in the world.
The story surrounding the history and eventual fate of the statues, is now captured in the film.

Crews spent some fourteen weeks filming in 7 different countries to put together the documentary, which will premiere at film festivals around the world over coming months.

The reconstruction project, meanwhile, is also well on its way, with a scale model of the statue having been produced for this year’s World Exposition in Aichi, Japan.

The eyes of the world are on the New 7 Wonders project – thanks to its participation in the global exhibition, Expo 2005.

The World Exposition, which is taking place in Aichi, Japan, until September 25, and which is expected to attract some 15 million visitors, features the campaign as one of its highlights.

In the Swiss pavilion, visitors to the fair can not only learn about the project to select the New 7 Wonders of the World, but they can also vote for one of the 150 nominated sites at computer ballot boxes.

Earlier this month, the Japanese version of the voting site was launched at the Expo, in the presence of New 7 Wonders founder, Bernhard Weber.

“The presence of the New 7 Wonders at the World Exposition fits perfectly with the Expo theme, ‘Symphony of Global Harmony,’” said Weber. “It is highlighting the value of the world’s treasures and peaceful co-existence between cultures, which is exactly what we are trying to achieve with our historical international project.”

As part of the display, the Swiss Pavilion also features a 3D model of the 55-metre tall Afghan Bamiyan Buddha statue, which was destroyed by the Taliban. Initially funded by the New 7 Wonders Foundation, this model can now be admired by visitors from all over the world.
