A survey conducted by the Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) revealed that shopping malls, business centres and ATM outlets at a bulk of the 220-odd petrol pumps have been built illegally.
Two illegal rooms at a petrol pump at Green Park and an unauthorised construction at a petrol pump at Bhikaji Cama Place were demolished by MCD as part of its drive against violations by the filling stations.
Several petrol pumps whose owners have built illegal rooms on the first floor and extended canopies over the vending machines beyond the permissible limit are likely to face action soon.
MCD's Engineer-in-chief, Deepak Mukhopadyay said instructions have been given to all zonal offices to issue notices to the petrol pump owners for encroachments and demolish illegal portions.
"In many cases, the petrol pump owners don't have a sanctioned plan," he said. At least 100 petrol pump owners have been booked for illegal constructions and issued notices for submitting sanctioned layout plans, he said.
Deputy commissioner, south zone, S K Saxena, said a majority of 24 petrol pumps in south Delhi are on the hit list. "Notices have been issued to several petrol pumps in Vasant Vihar, Green Park, Deer Park, Soami Nagar, Saket and GK," he said.
Most pump operators who have constructed unauthorised sheds and offices have been asked to produce sanctioned plans or permission for these, Saxena said.
Many petrol pumps here are owned by oil companies who hand these over to dealers for operation on a commission basis.
Indian Oil spokesperson, A N Jha, denied existence of unauthorised constructions at petrol pumps.
MCD officials maintained the illegal constructions were confirmed by the ministry of urban development.
"Our drive against petrol pumps was started after the ministry sought an action taken report from us," said a official at MCD's head-quarters.
