LE MERIDIEN NEW DELHI
CHECK IN COUNTER
My first day starts from the check in gate for the employees which is underground. OOPS!! Hard wired wires and big A/C blooms are just on my head. I can't even feel the A/C. Well it's all secondary , work comes first. A thick voice comes from the HR cabin " What will you take to show up!" OMG! I am scared . “Where is your tie and suit?” I am about to answer but before that she says, “ I am asking to your fellow mate”. You can't come to office like this. Please go home and come only when you have both the things in place.”
At this time I was fully drenched in sweat and hoping for my chance. “So what you know about marketing?”. A murmuring sound comes from my mouth 4 P, STP, sales management and all. “Ok that's all you can join to sales and marketing team.” Alas! I take a sigh of relief that at least I don't have to work under her and at the same time I take pity on my mates who are joining the HR department. Well that was more excitement than I expected least on my FIRST DAY !!
NOW DO MARKETING
Well I have joined marketing and sales department and on the very first day after the introduction I was put on a sales call. The Sales executive dragged me in a 24 story building in scorching heat of about 46 degree Celsius. Well, the only motivation was the lunch which was provided by them in their canteen separate for employees and it was truly rewarding.
I know that I would not be able to perform here if I only go on sales calls like this. So second day I make my pet excuse, “ Sir, I am not well and I can't go on field .Thus, if you permit I will do the work in the hotel itself.” After showing the concern that as I have come from Pune (which is much cooler place than Delhi),he showed me the door of the marketing cabin. I got introduced to a lady who seems to be hassled and is doing her breakfast while walking. I understood that this is the cabin which I was looking for and I have to start my internship from here only.
ORGANIZING THE EVENTS ( MET WITH THE HOT SHOTS )
Well this is the place which I am looking for. Now I have to organize the events . I was involved right from preparing the guest list till sending the thank you card. I was designing the cards , packing ,calling , managing the venue ,sending the invites through email ,phone or personally (like visiting embassies). On the day of the event I have to stay in hotel for at least 10 in the evening. But I enjoy thoroughly.
At these events ,I see how sales executive catch hold of new guest and make them prospect. How all the free dinners are converted into big deals of delegation, conferences and meets of repudiated organization. I managed to organized three events :
Spirit of Nero (Women's whisky club)
Turkish Food Festival (Chef from turkey showcasing their dishes)
Valery Purl’s Art Show (Painting exhibition by Valery Purl)
After organizing these events I have to look after uploading the pictures on the official Le Meriden Facebook page. Day by day I was collecting exciting and creative stuff in my kitty.
HARD CORE MARKETING
My mentor continuously gets impressed by my work and that gets me the work of designing the ELAN (quarterly newsletter of LE MERIDIEN NEW DELHI).Since it was a huge task, my mentor is also decides to work with me for designing the newsletter .The events, festivals ,meets, conferences which are scheduled to happen in the next three months were illustrated in the newsletter.
Well as if this was not enough, I have to make and deliver a presentation to the sales team on how to introduce "DELHI FOOD TOUR ". Delhi food tour is the company which showcases best delicacies from the nooks and crannies of Delhi.
Then I am required to benchmark all the 5 star hotels with respect to their new events and festivals and tabulate the data for what are the different venues in the property. Venues are categorized as specialty restaurants, all day dinning restaurants, bar, discotheques ,coffee shop and confectionary shops.
I also gave the advertisement feed to some online magazine partners of Le meridian and also organized the cookery show in the Turkish food festival week which was telecasted in AAJ TAK channel.
CONTRIBUTION
My contribution was towards making the database which would be helpful for Le meridian in the future and I also organized the feeds and testimonials of guests so that they also lined path for improvement.
LESSONS
I learnt important lessons about the designing and managing events. Gained live experience of handling the guests at these events and the experience of working on hard core marketing tools for service industry.
LAST DAY
Last day I thank the marketing head and also The head of sales who showed me the way to marketing cabin. I actually reported to him on the last day to get my certificate signed and thanked him. So these are my two months in a 5 star hotel.
